How long do you think Eve will continue to run?

It's obviously up to CCP and they could close down EVE tomorrow if they wanted.

No one talks about WoW any more and others have pretty much fallen off the map or closed for good.

Many people are moving away from PC use and I've heard of some people playing on tablets which is good I suppose.

I personally would like to see TV adverts for EVE and maybe they should somehow get the game to run on Andoid and iOS tabs to get the kids hooked.

What prodded me to start thinking about this was the whole Alpha clone thing. A move to try to get back some subscribers perhaps?

What do you think the future of Eve is?

You're gonna need to cite that, because the citation I have begs to differ. Strongly.

EVE has a lot of life in her if she's treated right. She is the single most unique gaming experience available right now for a very affordable price. Don't count her out just because you have personal concerns and think everyone else shares them. That's projection.

The future of EVE is exactly as it always has been. A niche game, played by a small (in the grand scheme of things) but incredibly devoted fanbase. As to your incorrect assertion that people are moving away from PC, you should probably look at the sales figures for NVIDIA and AMD gaming grade GPU's over the last few years. Here's a hint, the numbers aren't falling.

I must be so behind the times. I just dropped over 5k RL ISKies on a new rig to run EVE on a Predator X34 ultra wide 21:9 WQHD monitor. Though I'm still waiting for the new 1080ti to hit the market before I'm finished.

Just because a few extra graphics cards have been sold and some steam games, the overall trend is falling.

You should probably learn the difference between the sales of expensive pre-builts, which is what all those are talking about, and the sales of GPU's. As for it just being "A few"...

Sales are up 63% YOY. That's not "A few".

Also, from your own link:

Quote:
JPR claims that while the market of desktop AIBs is shrinking, sales of expensive graphics cards used by gamers are increasing.
“However, in spite of the overall decline, somewhat due to tablets and embedded graphics, the PC gaming momentum continues to build and is the bright spot in the AIB market,” said Jon Peddie, the head of JPR.

Try harder.

As we will get Win10 emulating software on ARM processors soon, you could play EVE on your tablet with new ARM processor.

I dont know how long EVE will run, but I think it can run longer than most people think.

We have seen *EVE is dying* threads for more than 10 years and EVE managed to rise in numbers multiple times since then.

So its actually *news about my death have been greatly exaggerated* all this time.

OP doesn't understand where the data they are quoting comes from, and doesn't grasp that it is talking entirely about the pre-built market, which is in decline because more and more people are building their own computers. Which is why Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA are all experiencing massive increases in sales despite the slow down in the pre-built market.

Try harder.

Agreed. It can be difficult to determine computer sales when more and more people are building their own now days and not buying store pre-builts.

PC isn't dying

consoles are dying yes as they've reached the limitation of their hardware already and haven't even progresse much through the current console generation's estimated life span

but thats no surprise. their CPU and GPU were already inferior to most PCs on launch.

as for mobile. thats a new market yes, but its not hurting the PC market at all.
and overall, the mobile market is largely temporary. games pop up, get popular, and die fast

see pokemon go for proof of that. meteoric rise. and already falling fast.

and don't get me started on VR, many game devs are already coming out saying VR as it is now has no future in gaming. just a small sub market.

Overall, this year has been a largely quiet one for PC game releases, because as always all releases are in october, november, and december.
so most studies haven't include the recent data.

I know more than some about this, because until recently I ran a company that did precisely that. Now more and more people are turning to self builds, the number of people willing to pay the extra money out for a pre-built is dropping. None of which, of course, has any bearing whatsoever on PC gaming. Just because people don't buy a new GPU every 6 months, doesn't mean they've all gone off to play flappy sack on their iPads or something.

Don't worry. No MMO will be shut down as long as the subs will pay for the servers plus some margin.
What may happen at some point is that the game goes into maintenance mode, but EVE is quite the opposite of this IMHO.
And I wouldn't be surprises if there would be a privat server run with donation once the Investors pull out in many, many years from now.

My answer is "I don't care". I've spent the last almost 10 years of my life playing EVE and the entire time I've watched people struggle with "EVE is dying" anxiety. Turns out that it's been going on wayyyy longer than I've been here. On top of that, EVERY online game suffers from players with the same kind of anxiety.

I think this happens because people are emotionally invested in the game and they think that if they can figure out when it's going to end they can ween themselves off beforehand and thus suffer less discomfort.

It ends when it ends, while it's a wonderful experience and led to me making lots of real friends, if the servers shut down tomorrow, life goes on.

My thinking was the same.
But we would need quite powerful servers, and a source code.
Servers in future may not be such a problem, but source code may be. There was leak of it from 2007, so it would be fairly different than what majority of players know for 10 years. Larger numbers of people were logged in and played past that 2007 year.

Keep playing the game.
If there's an official announcement, you'll hear about it.
Until then, keep playing the game.

Eve-Online is one of the better games at keeping updated.
There is no need to go and buy the new patch packaged as an expansion.
Graphics and other core components keep getting better.
Players come and go, as they do in all games. New shinies come out all the time, but Eve is always there for when the shine has faded.

Games usually sell when the brand is strong.
Eve has:
The MMO,
Valkyrie and Gunjack for VR,
Is Dusk 514 still going?
The True Stories comic.

Not many games get onto national news for events like the mass battles Eve sees.
