Dev's, any chance collision damage will be instituted into the game? Immersion; sitting in Skiff in a belt and the small asteroids floating around bounce off the boat's fenders and causes a "thud" and or "scrap" sound while spinning off into space. Ice particles sing against the hull, BUT damn, that one big rock dented my right front fender!

OR, teeth gritting as the Stabber barrels toward the unsuspecting miner's Orca, SLAMMMMM! Dent the hull of the Orca and smashes the front end of the Stabber!

Now, this could introduce "Kamikaze" play style into the game! In the middle of a fight, out of paste, charges, ammo....I refuse to run, my ship is my final solution......my only weapon!

Also, warping through space stations?

Collision should cause damage, depending on the on the speed and volume of the object and then the damage will show as in combat model or even develop a new dent and scratch model damage image for ships, like gaping tears in the ship hull rending fleet hangars or cargo spaces useless until it is repaired, just another lonely belt grinding thought....

This idea has been proposed many times before, and has been shot down time and time again.

Mainly because busy undocks like Jita would become a complete clusterfuck. But also because of the Concord shenanigans that would undoubtedly follow, plus all the technical limitations.

If I did the maths right, a 500mn stabber packs 835.7 terrajoules. Which is apparently equivalent to 199.74 kilotons of TNT

The more you know!

not enough to vaporise a planet mind, but it'll flatten a city for sure.

I think you might be my new best friend, fellow math geek.

I actually did the numbers for crashing a Leviathan into a planet (you know like CCP did), and came away with some pretty spectacular destruction.

Good God, not this idea again.

Show us. Was it just calculations or did you use a program to graphically demonstrate the calculations, like Universe Sandbox?

Oh, and just GTFO.

This is not a "Nerf Bumpers thread". Quite in contrast, this is an open declaration of brutalization of any ship that moves in space, freighters in particular. Colliding a ceptor (or a couple of ceptors) with 16,200 km/s (somewhat average 4,500 m/s) into a freighter is the ultimate, cheap gank tool. Bumping isn't even necessary anymore, just steer your ship into the target and watch the fireworks.

My ridicule, heavy criticism and general pale outlook about your or CCP's ideas is nothing but an encouragement to prove me wrong. Give it a try.

Could be interesting, but I think there is no way to make it work without too many obvious exploits.

A) Concord doesn't care about bumping:
BS will smash into hauler and destroy it without penalty.

B) Concord kills the faster ship in the bump
Slow enough BS bump to push you to another ship - so you hit some other ship very fast and be destroyed by concord.

C) Concord kills both ships involved the bump
Even easier - MWDed frigate smashing in the hauler to die and have concord destory hauler.

D) Bumps at any speed count with concord destroying faster ship - frig will hit larger ship extremely fast and be destroyed. That larger ship will then be pushed to another nearby frig and have Concord destroy the larger ship.

Even if only environment hits count you won't be able to make it work - BS will push hauler to a sign or a miner to asteroids and destroy it without penalty.

i don't care how well you tank it that MWD cepter will make sure there is nothing left of your BB

I feel like there was a mythbusters episode on this.... where they compared the effects of a light, fast moving object, vs a heavier, slower moving one..... IIRC the tiny mass object had a very bad day.

The smaller object always suffers more, but that doesn't mean the larger object doesn't also have a bad day.

5.52 x10^20 joules. Which is right around 130 megatons.

Also, for curious, I punched everything into the asteroid impact simulator. I used some fairly conservative numbers, but I still ended up with an impact crater the size of New York City and roughly 700 meters deep.

How does the EM Drive factor into your...maths?

http://www.sciencealert.com/there-s-a-good-chance-nasa-s-em-drive-results-are-flawed-says-propulsion-expert

How does the EM Drive generate the energy it needs for momentum?

The answer is Quantum Physics which will completely evaporate the need for chemically propelled engines such as the MN series.

If a large asteroid ten miles in diameter collides with a smaller asteroid that is ten meters in diameter both should suffer the same destructive force of energy at the moment of impact.
