I wonder how long it will take for an alpha clone to really get going gas huffing. You need to train gas mining, probing - the whole works. It will take a while until you ear your first wormhole fortune.

1. Ask the guys who killed you to show you the way out or
2. Self destruct your pod
3. Next time bookmark (save location) the wormhole you used to come in before you do anything else :)

Another thing I forgot to mention about wormholes.

If you land in a wormhole, especially a C4 to C6 that is inhabited...warp to every anomaly and then bail. The residents will try to thank you in person for your dedication to their well-being. Twisted

And in your Venture, take some useless ammo with you. Land at the gas site at 0 and drop one ammo charge in a can and leave it there. Some WH residents might warp to the gas site at 0km cloaked and the can will decloak them. Saved my behind a few times when I did the ninja huffing.

You don't need to take ammo. Just create a bookmark and jet can the bookmark at 0 on the site. A minor clarification, it's not the can that decloaks them. When you orbit a gas cloud, you orbit the outside of it, so you can be approached by a cloaked ship. When you orbit a can placed at zero, you're orbiting it while inside the cloud itself, so when someone warps to the cloud cloaked, the gas itself has a better chance of decloaking them.

For the OP, always always always check the system for active POSes and citadels before running sites. You want to know who the residents are before doing anything. My standard to do list in a new WH.

1. d-scan for active POSes, bookmark them and look up the corps on zKillboard
2. see step 1, but for citadels
3. scan and bookmoark every site in that WH and every WH that's connected to it.
4. repeat steps 1-2 for connecting WHs
5. if everything looks good, now run sites

And of course, mash d-scan every 5 seconds you're there.

Helpful hint: If you see a gas site called an Ordinary Perimeter Reservoir DO NOT WARP TO IT! It will have Sleeper sentry guns.

Another thing you have to consider, especially if a wormhole is occupied (or even if you suspect it is).

Do NOT warp directly to a moon. Any moon!

You might arrive at the site of a hostile POS. Or even land in a warp disruption bubble near said POS (so you can't leave) with anchored containers (to de-cloak ships). In that case, your ship will get blown up.

Here I used to have a sig of our old Camper in space. Now it is disregarded as being the wrong format. Looking out the window I see one thing: Nothing wrong with the format of our Camper! Silly CCP......

Another obvious tip but still invaluable, no matter how bored you get NEVER afk whist mining or huffing in WH space lol. I blew up a covetor pilot and his shiny pod whilst he was afk jetcan mining for veldspar of a things, complacency (and stupidity) will get you killed in wh space.

Without going over what's already been said, especially the excellent advice by ShahFluffers earlier on, my $0.02 is this: Don't get too greedy.

Most of the times I've gotten jumped in a wormhole it's been because I hung around too long running sites. "Just one more, I'll be fine....." BOOM! The longer you're visible on D-Scan, the more time people have to get their gank squads together, ship up in a hard counter to whatever you're flying and come after you.

People in wormhole space have a very strong tendency to shoot first and then think about asking questions later.

Have a hunt around, you may find a WH corp prepared to take you in as an Alpha. Wormhole space is a lot less dangerous and spooky when you have a handful of friends close-by to come and save you when the inevitable happens.
