Is playing as a tourist doable?

Hi, I'm brand new to EVE and frankly I find it very daunting. I have a question for more experienced players because I'm hoping to be able to play this game in a non-typical manner:

I'm interesting in seeing all the neat locations in EVE and going through any of the lore that might be interesting. That's it. I'm not interested in getting rich, fighting other ships, joining groups, learning complex tactics, etc. I'm just looking for a tourist's experience of EVE, so I can check out interesting looking planets or space stations, that sort of thing. I think the game is fantastic visually and I'd like to get a feel for what the EVE universe is like. If I get blown up in the process, that's no problem as long as I can just keep exploring again without too much trouble.

So my main question is: is this even a remotely practical goal for this game? I have no idea if the mechanics make this realistic or not. Alternately, if there are already references that kind of show off the entire world of EVE, that could be almost as good. I'm willing to learn some things, but I just want to explore the world in general without having to dive super deep into the mechanics or dump an ungodly amount of hours building up my character to do so.

Thanks in advance for your answers / advice.

All you need is a shuttle and some luck for the 0.0 locations. You may die a few times so placing your medical clone often and wisely should be a priority. I will send you an evemail with some links of notable locations.

You may find additional locations in the cronicals.

As I just queried it, we do have a history wiki. Take everything you find there with a rather large grain of salt. It was written by folk who depend on hearsay, mostly of the losers of conflicts.

this!

Nice idea to travel, and infinitely doable in EvE! How about doing a screenshot log/write up of your progress??

Pretty sure that's exactly how that blog started.

OP, try mailing the author, I'd be willing to bet they'll be delighted to hear from you given your ambition Blink

I would suggest you would have a much more positive experience doing it as an Omega clone.

You can tour Nul sec in an Interceptor with a cloak. 'Ceptors are immune to Bubbles so you can travel freely, and the cloak will allow you to enjoy the sights at your leisure.

And Low sec would be better toured in a CovOps Frig, or an Astero.

Both setups could be trained very quickly, and should be done by the time you complete the Hi-Sec locations.

It's a great way to experience the game.

And don't be afraid to 'o/' to other isolated players in local, in Low and Nul. Low particularly has a surprisingly social and chatty community compared to Hi-sec where everyone seems to just get on with their own thing.

I had made a point to hit all the highsec tourism sites years ago. Capital systems, the interesting beacons. While that stuff was interesting, it was the stuff that was off the tourism guides that I'm proud of. I was at the shattered planet on the day wormholes were added, with a bookmark to fly around the debris. I found a station close enough to its planet that you could ram the one from the other, and the collisions would glitch and you'd ricochet back. The tense atmosphere of high>null choke points. The strange businesslike atmosphere of low > null capital staging systems. I don't think normal space tourism is particularly financially sustainable unless you also happen to put out a blog or get a benefactor. I included experiences in my space tourism (FC in charge of some capital ships, take part of a full fleet, some goals within my corp) which also had to include a broader game experience and steady income.

Good plan.

However, IMO the true magic of EVE comes not from the lore or the pretty sights, but rather the synergy and unpredictability that comes of thousands of people existing on a single shared server, all sharing the same universe. This, I believe, is what keeps those who stay here year after year (temporary ragequits and burnouts included, of course).

For that reason, your goal is of course perfectly attainable (and indeed, that is something that I've thought about for years but haven't been arsed), but you may find that you get more out of the game by being an active participant.

Whatever you choose though, good luck!

Eve tourism is definitely a thing. I would not even call your playstyle a-typical. However when you say that you are not looking to learn any complex tactics that is when things get a little questionable.

High sec is a very small portion of this game. If you want to get out and see the sights it will require that you go into some dangerous areas of space. If you are willing to keep waking up in your new clone and try again then you will eventually get to see the sights that you want to see. However if you learn some tactics about travel and survival in low and null sec space it will be far easier for you.

The above being said if just seeing stuff is truly all that you want to do then just log onto SiSi and do it there. You wont' have any problems on the test server. Of course you won't be able to say that you have experienced Eve as the other players are the content in this game but you will get to "see the sights".

Of course it is possible. It would be the same experience a tourist would have in Brazil trying to not get scammed, robbed or killed.

OP. you would really benefit from having access to omega clone items, specifically a covert-ops cloak and a ship that can use it (covert scanning frigate or Astero come to mind)

A T3 cruiser (Tengu, Proteus, Legion, Loki) is expensive and a bit of training time (but not as much as one might think if the training plan is focused on that - as a new player get your core skills [engineering things etc] trained up first, though), but can fit a nullification amplifier subsystem that allows you to warp right through interdiction "bubbles" and is very handy for traveling through 0.0 security space (and can also fit a subsystem that allows use of a covert-ops cloaking device - and a probe launcher and emergent locus subsystem for scanning power) A luxury yacht can also be used for nullified / cloaked travel but is much less flexible in what you can make it to do.

Read this stuff: http://blackclawtravels.blogspot.com/2011/10/black-claws-going-sightseeing.html It's very old, but the principles of 0.0-space travel are generally gold. The guy who wrote that blog (Black Claw - who stopped playing eve long ago for real-life reasons) ran what at one time was a well-known nullsec survival and pvp training corp (OUCH).

Have fun.

Anything is theoretically possible. Just increasingly unlikely the lower a system's security status. In high sec you can largely run around all day ignoring the rest of the 40,000 other players online. Don't know why anyone would want to-- but it's a common way of life there.

Your best bet is an Interceptor. Those will align and get to warp faster than most ships can achieve a lock. They are also not affected by warp disruption bubbles. With halfway decent skills and a basic fitting, a Ceptor is nigh impossible to catch other than by die hard dedicated gate camps. Which are very rare despite what care bears would have you believe.
For all intents and purposes, travel in a Ceptor is as 'safe' as it gets in Eve. You can easily move into low/null and laugh as you moonwalk away from gate camps and anchored bubbles.

If you want to actually do something while out and about- I suggest exploration in an Astero/Covops. The Covops cloak makes combat avoidance simple. Basic hacking doesn't spawn any NPC's to shoot, just a mini-game to play.
Outside of high sec, you can and likely will encounter other players. They may just run away assuming you are hostile. Or they may attack- this is Eve and non-consensual PvP is a core mechanic of the game.

Remember- your goal in Eve isn't to never get killed- you are an immortal space god unaffected by death. You balance loss with gain.

Just being a tourist isn't going to get you any real isk to replace losses. However, your losses will be minor and shouldn't wipe you completely out of isk.

Another option would be roving salvager/loot thief/drone rustler. Probe down people's wrecks (or skulk around after a PvP fight) and salvage or steal the loot. Care bears tend to stay in one area, so even if you get a swarm of them angry at you....1) they are care bears and usually the worst they can accomplish is the 'care bear stare' where they lock you but can't shoot because they fear PvP. 2) just fly to another region and they will forget about you soon enough.

It doesn't always make people happy with you...but oh well, this is Eve. If you wanted to make friends you wouldn't be asking how to run around avoiding any form of player contact.

If you really only care for the lore then you may want to look into the test server, Singularity. There's no non-consentual PvP allowed on Singularity with the exception of 2 specific systems, so you can fly around there all you want without having to worry about losing your ship.

It's way less fun than doing it on Tranquility and not really much of an accomplishment, but it might suit you the best if you really only care about lore and want to avoid player interactions on your travels.

When you don't know the difference between there, their, and they're, you come across as being so uneducated that your viewpoint can be safely dismissed. The literate is unlikely to learn much from the illiterate.

Black Claw founded my first corp, Touring New Eden, and taught me. I played as a nullsec tourist for my first months of the game.

This is an account of my first adventure: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=3265988#post3265988

This type of game play is wonderful. I have truly enjoyed it. Yes, you lose ships, but let me tell you there is nothing like jumping into a nullsec system in a cheap ship, when the system is full of pilots, and getting out alive supported by nothing but your own wits.

(Being chased by Russians through several systems runs a close second.)

Earlier advice as to omega status is spot on.....an interceptor and cloak will make travel much easier. Perhaps, too easy. Travel in my beginner fit atron gave me adrenaline surges that hooked me on this game, and that I will never forget.

So, go for it.

You can fund this lifestyle, by ratting as you go along. And by all means strike up conversations. Some of my best memories in EVE started by my typing in local:

I played for a couple of months a year or so ago and I am going to again once my World ofTanks premium time runs out in a few weeks time.

I played as a tourist the first time I played the game.. I read about some epic battle in a gaming website and thought I would like to visit it. The site was in the middle of nowhere. It required being able to fly cloaked ships otherwise you will die. That means not an alpha pilot.

I would recommend that you also do exploration in order to earn isk on the way. Exploration is the most interesting pve in my opinion as you are doing it other people's space and there is a lot of risk/fun involved. It can be nerve wracking but you will make money. Being chased from system to system and diving into a worm hole to escape is a lot of fun. Being killed in a warp bubble while you are panicked and miss clickand fail to escape is less fun. But when you die don't take it personally. Everyone is out to get you.

Learn the scanning skills and the skills required for cloaking. Do the career agent jobs relating to exploration.

That travel blog is a great place to start for ideas of where to go.

When I start playing again I intend on doing a circumnavigation of the galaxy.

This game is a sandbox and you can play it how you want to. Being a tourist is definitely possible and doing it on the cheap is doable too.
