Could anyone point me to any good guides, or perhaps even some nice tips for a fresh captain, would be much appreciated.

If your character is an alpha you'll will be very limited on your options, if you have a paid account this opens up much as you can train anything you want.

What are you looking for, profit, saving ISK, becoming a CEO, or a valued member?

Making profit is difficult as you need to find a niche.

Saving ISK is one of the best benefits of being an Indy.

Being a valued member can bring you profit from Corp members.

Being CEO can bring nice profits.

I Think Indy would be best suited for my playstyle, Id like to mine and use what i get to make into things that i can sell.

I'm aware I need to learn a lot about probing and being careful and all that, but I'd like to know where i should focus early on. Just as an arrow to get me in the right direction

Have a look at eve uni website and read the pages for mining, refining and manufacturing. Later on you can read up on invention which is used for creating t2 items. Also read up on salvaging. Planetary Interaction I know little of but might be of your interest to.

Join a corp and leave them if you don't like it and find a new one until you find one that you feel cool about.

After reading all this in my first months of eve I realized I better stack up all my ore and salvaged materials until I understand what to manufacture for a profit. Determining that took me a year or so. In the meantime I made isk by doing missions and manufacturing a bit under the lead of corpmates. I also sold plex I bought with real cash. After over a year playing I finally am ready to manufacture t1 stuff on my own, while knowing my profit and costs and all.

Good luck and welcome to eve. Message me in game if you want to join my corp. We can have you start in one of our high sec corps and you can make the move to null when you feel ready.

Welcome to Eve.

As a new player your industry options are limited, whether or not you are an Alpha clone but there are opportunities for profit.

Mining can help you build up some working capital but it takes a lot of skill to mine and refine efficiently. If you do mine, you can add value to your ore by compressing it at a nearby Citadel.

Manufacturing T1 modules or ships is unlikely to make you much ISK. The barrier to entry is low; a lot of people make this stuff using minerals they harvest themselves and sell it to buy orders at the closest trade hub. Most of the time, they'd earn more by compressing and selling the ore.

I started by manufacturing small rigs and recommend that path. The blueprints are cheap and quickly researched - even with Alpha skills. The salvage you need can be purchased at low cost in backwater stations and hauled in a frigate. A product I've been using as an example for over a year is the small anti-em screen reinforce 1. It's still profitable https://www.fuzzwork.co.uk/blueprint/?typeid=31716

You will need to do market research. Eve is a cyclical commodity market. In the top half of the cycle you will make money. If you chase prices down into the bottom half of the cycle, you will lose money.

Taking into account all costs, except BPO research, I found I make a loss on the majority of t1 modules I can manufacture, but still I find a significant amount that do make profits. I have about 10 items that make a profit of around 100% even.

Please take mining and production as two completely separate businesses. Usually you make more ISK selling the (compressed) ore you mine than the T1 products, you can build from after the lossy mineral reprocessing. Also evaluate each step of the production chain for whether it adds profit to the final product or not. T2 products for example require the T1 version as input. Often the T1 version can be bought cheaper on the market than you are able to produce it. The other way also happens, where it's better to sell the T1 directly than the T2, because adding the extra steps has a negative or zero ROI (basically the profit is already all in the T1 parts).

The reasons why T1 is reguarly not profitable (there are exceptions) is because of loot and a lot of people who don't do the math ("minerals I mine are free"). Also the same item is sold multiple times, and looters don't have the build cost and can undercut you indefinitely.

I'm my own NPC alt.

If uou are a new alpha clone, you learn all you need about that level of mining from the tutorial agents. Very limited with just the venture.
