VIP Mode is a TEST mode for the server. It allows the DEV/GM test the cluster without screwing up anything the players may be doing.

A failover to another clusternode usually takes just a few seconds.
Unless tthey have to restore the database, thats a different stroy.

Failovers are when the primary system can't pass off to a secondary system. In this case, the main database couldn't "pass" off data to the secondary database. With databases as big as those storing the information for an MMO, you have several backups, clones, whatever... Then for performance, you update all these intermittently.

I'm a bit rough on this, but I think that's the gist of it.

Sounds like a database issue, could be a hardware failure, data corruption :O


I think it's a situation where the DB failed at some point during TQ being onlined. Not all of it came online so they have to shut down and identify the issue causing the DB to fail. Shouldn't involve data corruption.

Any server "failover" usually refers to the primary server experiencing a serious or catastrophic failure of hardware or data such that all of the tasks/load need to be redirected to an equivalently configured backup server capable of taking over.

Sometimes this can be done live and nobody's the wiser that it even happened. Sometimes it requires an interruption of service (which is what we seem to have here.)

In any event, it's serious, let them work and wish them well.

Two copies (or more) of the database are kept in case of a problem - hardware or software.

Fail-over is the process of switching to the secondary copy after a fault has been discovered in the primary copy.

If CCP's set up their system properly, there should be little to no data loss since the cluster moves practically the whole system to another server and starts it as it were when it was last recorded as running.

...That is, unless the failover somehow transfers an already corrupt system, at which point we're screwed.
