Yes, and No.
It sounds like you're using the word 'class' as it is used in other games - like Tank, healer etc.
While those terms are relevant to EvE, you don't 'pick' a class, you 'are' the class of whichever ship you're in.
Is that what you meant?

Destroyer class ships are designed to kill frigates.

Alpha clone destroyer will not be as high DPS as Omega clone destroyer.

This is because of skills.

Omega can train:

- Destroyer skill higher - for more bonus DPS
- Weapon skills to use Tier 2 weapons - for more DPS
- Support skills (armor, shields, energy, navigation, targeting) - for more defenses and speed

For an estimate, Alpha can probably achieve 250-300 DPS, Omega with high skills and T2 gear can achieve 500-600 DPS.

EDIT: Look at it the correct way: 2 Alphas have a decent chance to kill an Omega. 3-4 Alphas in a fleet = definitely dead Omega. This is a group PVP game.

There are a couple of destroyer based fleets that I have made the aquaintence of.
Cormorants (Caldari), Talwars (Minmatar), and Thrashers (Minmatar) are the first ones that come to mind.
Algos make for a pretty fun drone fleet. Catalysts... er... have a particular niche that they fill.

I'm not sure how often people roll out in Coercers as the ship of the line.
Dragoons could be interesting en masse.

Destroyers are fun. You'll be efficient in that you could have a blast for under 4m.

Yeah you can be effective in a dessy.

I've killed battlecruisers n stuff with 3-4 day old trial characters in the past it's all about choosing your fights. Usually in a frigate too so less DPS than your destroyer will likely be doing Lol

Get stuck in.

Everyone does have their favorite class of ships that they put more skill points in, though the more defining aspect is actual experience and flight time. In my case there are so many ships that I could fly really really well skill wise but that I've never actually sat in and would cause Picard face palm moments if I tried to do serious business with them. In a lot of cases I picked up those skills to be a benefit to something else that I actually fly.

In the case of destroyers you're going to be picking up the same skills that that frigate class players use for their weapons, you're going to be picking up the same skills that every ship uses for core skills, and your tanking type will be the same for most ships of that type of tank as well.

On the bright side destroyers have gotten some nice buffs to them since I first started playing, when I first started it was generally a good idea to skip over destroyers since they weren't a requirement to be in cruisers.
