I read forum and dev blogs, but still have a question - when?
When they enable it for self-protection?
Many POS have defence to protect from 3-5 BS. Sometimes more, sometimes less. But they all have battle AI. Citadel need manual control. Why?

Does anybody know news about progress in it?

If not - my idea - enable citadel battle AI for self-defence and control of weapons/drones.

I think the idea is that Citadels are not supposed to have automated defenses.

Either someone is online to protect it (you only have to worry during the vulnerability window) or it will be easily taken.

No more "deathstars"

Citadels (and I assume other new structures like the upcoming Engineering Complexes) cannot defend themselves automatically. A player with the appropriate roles and structure management skills must take control of the defenses. This is by design and consistent with CCP's focus on active gameplay. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for automated defenses.

Citadels don't have automated defenses because they aren't vulnerable 24/7, and because it takes no skill investment to effectively gun them.

Thus, you only need someone ready to sit in the chair during vuln windows, unlike the POS which can be shot in to reinforcement 24 hours a day.

Then, POS still out of concurency at little and middle corps.
Their full firepower obtained with low cost - more then firepower of citadels what can obtained for this money and thet has more mobility - it can dismounted by few hours, if agressor stronger then defence.

POS are being removed, which kind of makes them irrelevant here.

A properly gunned citadel can eat whole fleets. It should not be able to do that without someone at the controls.

In answer to your questions:

-Never
-Never
-Maybe, but CCP decided against it
-What?
-Yes, the progress is zero since CCP didn't want AI control
-Your idea is dead on arrival, good luck hope CCP changes their minds about this (they won't)

Glad I could help you!

Citadels have manual controls for their defence because they aren't vulnerable 24/7. The owner sets the vulnerability window start times, so can set then for when they are active and can manually control the defences.

A POS tower is vulnerable to attack 24/7 so needs some automated ability to respond, because the owner can't be on 24/7.

OP, POSes are not stronger than Citadels. They're a little more min-max-able but Citadels are hands-down stronger defensive structures.

As everyone else here has said, POSes are going away and Citadels are not planned to get an auto-defense mode. They require one person to gun as opposed to the larger numbers required for a POS, which is an investment even a small corp should be able to support.

Instead of automated weapons you have vulnerability timers where you're supposed ti to be online yourself to defend it.

I say about money-eqivalented objects.
large pos stronger then small citadel.

Large pos can protect themselfs from 5 ships that has 5k dps. Small citadel with it weapons and vulnerability -cannot.

5k dps and 7m shield limit for 50km struktures are little.
