But it's like the same thing I say to carebears. If you haven't made the effort to secure things, then of course they'll find things on you.

Does everything in life have to involve hand-holding?

Apparently to some people, yes. My point is, and has always been, have the conviction to say "No, I won't give you that. And if you're no longer interested because of that, then we can stop wasting each other's time" and move on with your life.

8 years in EVE and I've never given out my full API key on one of my main accounts. I realize it is a video game and I really have no privacy to invade - but the concept annoys me. I did go as far as giving an empty API key to my sov alliance once, so they could see the 3 character names on that account - but no information about them. I believe they asked for full api keys as well - but they left it to the corp leadership to gather those....and I'd been in the corp long enough by then that nobody ever thought to ask me for it.

Despite being unwilling to provide an API key, I've never really had any issues finding decent corps to join. And of course once I went solo, I didn't need to ask myself for my own API key P

Ironically however, there is *one* character I've ever given out my full API key for: My dedicated AWOXing alt - made for the specific and sole purpose of trying out Corp Theft and AWOXing. On this character, I freely distributed my full API key to all corporations that asked for it. I also made sure that all of my AWOX kills were posted on all of the public killboards, and I'm not 100% sure but some of my chat logs with victims may have been publicly searchable on pastebin. I did of course hide my true intentions while joining - but did not *lie* to do so - I simply omitted a lot of information and was sketchy on details of "what do you do in EVE"...

This character also had no issues joining corps, right up until the day I got bored killing faction fit faction battleships/freighters/orcas in this manner.

So while I still refuse to give out my full API key to anyone on general principle - I'd have to say 99.9% of the groups that collect them don't have the first ****ing clue what to actually do with them from a security stand-point. They are just a security blanket to make people "feel better"

The dead swans lay in the stagnant pool. They lay. They rotted. They turned Around occasionally. Bits of flesh dropped off them from Time to time. And sank into the pool's mire. They also smelt a great deal.

Api itself don't show much if you care about hiding something. How you can play this game on 1 account, even in higsec it is hard.
Hard? You don't like hard games? When does multiple accounts become "we" play EVE? 2? 12? 32??

I once (with my little brother) watched a barn full of lambs running in this massive group of mini-wool around in a continuous oval - there were so many lambs there was no break in their numbers on the floor - one continuous oval of lambs running counter clockwise on this barn floor.

Every now and then, one would jump. As there was nothing on the floor but...them....there was nothing to jump OVER, but be that as it may every now and then one WOULD jump. Immediately, the lamb behind that one jumped at the same spot, then all that followed jumped at the same spot creating a little wave at this spot where this one lamp jumped.

That wave persisted till the original lamb that jumped ran back over the same spot and didn't jump. Then the wave would flatten out ... until another lamb, a little later, jumped over another spot...where there was nothing to jump over. As long as you wanted to stand there, you could watch them do this. . . one jumps, the rest have to jump because the one did . . . just in case there MIGHT be something there . . . even though there never was.

Damndest thing about it was, it reminded me of people. API huh? Right.

Whatever you've been smoking lately. Stop.
If it isn't my favorite person to annoy! Thanks for your . . . two cents . . . I doubt it'll get to a dollar by Nov. 13th.

We must accommodate the idiocracy.

I'd have to agree with you on that. They ask for them because they feel like it's something they should do, but beyond that they have no clue what to actually look for.

Not all of us have the ISK or RL money to plex ninety billion accounts, multiboxing with screens all over the place.

Some of us are quite happy running the one account. I have never felt the need to multibox. One character at a time is sufficient on all other games, so it seems normal to do the same on Eve. However, each to their own, and if you want to pay CCP ridiculous sums of money so you can mine an entire belt with just yourself, knock yourself out.

However it is nice to have three different toons on one account. Eve offers a lot of varied activities, so it's nice to have each toon specializing in different things.

Which brings me to my point:

Full account APIs, and corps demanding them... If you can explain to me the logic in this, please do. Even more so when Alphas are out. If I am going to AWOX you, I'd probably use a toon on a trial account, slightly skilled up. All that happens when you ask for full APIs is another account gets created, and BAM you're AWOXed again.

Any toon can be a spy, I fail to see what you accomplish if you find out my main is in PL, Gewns or CODE. Which they're not of course ;)

Stop asking for full APIs. You're only doing it because you want to come across as oh-so-businesslike and look at us, we're all corporate, etc. You're a tiny 5 man corp ffs. If I wanted to kill you all I wouldn't even be having this convo. Just let my highsec carebear toon join you, and don't ask questions about what I do when I bid you all fly safe. Is it so important that you know my every move on every toon? It's best if you don't, anyway, as it would only make you jealous. Imagine. We're running level 3s and doing a spot of mining, then I log off. Do you really want to know that I'll be in sov, dropping cynos and flying dreads? You'll never be at the top like that anyway, so why not live in ignorance? When we split our ore haul and you give me 5m ISK, do you really want to know the last contract I created was over 200 billion? Really?

I think what it comes down to is you just want to look powerful and picky. And that's why you have 50 man corps, only 3 of which logged in within the last month, and who dock up and pretend you're still having fun every time Marmite has a go (which is probably every week).

TL;DR. Just stop it already.

All it takes is 1 extra account. Stop shinning. Don't join a Corp asking for API and YOUR problem is solved.

Enjoy your scrub Corp.

Been around since the beginning.

As others have said: you're arguing that it's stupid to put locks on your doors at home, because any thief worth his salt will pick your silly locks anyway, and the police have that battering ram that breaks your door down anyway, so, basically, locks are stupid.

But they're not.

Because they stop the casual, or opportunity, criminals.

EDIT: Look at it this way, corps that ask for API know that you can awox, steal, spy, etc., but they want you to put some effort into it, rather than being known as the corp that any snot nosed pubbie can steal from.

Pretty sure I was about as casual as one can get about my awoxing/etc... As I say I pretty much went out of my way to make sure all information on the character's activities was 100% public even without an API key by checking that it uploaded to killboards immediately/etc.

I would personally argue that your door lock is your basic killboard check/forum search/even google search to see if there are any obvious problems with the applicant. Many people don't even bother to use this basic security measure as it is old fashioned and clunky and annoying.

The "Full API" is the high-tech, flashy, fancy full-home alarm system that can theoretically protect your home from pretty much any threat of any kind.... But there are well-known exploits that people can still use to break in if they want to badly enough (clean account/etc) and your alarm system will never trigger.... and of course, as I said, 99.9% of people don't know how to use this fancy high-powered alarm system, so they never actually bother to *turn it on* (look at the API key)...

edit:
Basically, for the vast majority of corps, a "Full API Check" requirement is the equivalent of sticking the alarm system company's sticker on the front of your house, but never actually getting an alarm system. It *might* deter the casual criminal - but anybody who takes a closer look is going to see right through the pathetic attempt at pretending your home is secure.

Creepy recruiters who want to touch me are certainly 1 good reason to never give out my API...

Full APIs simply give more information. It's useless if you don't use it. I've been in corps that didn't ask for APIs, and I was in a corp that took three days to go through every forum post and every message I sent in game. They asked me questions about messages I sent to people six months prior.

The corp that was vigilant and actually used API information along with KBs and other sources had a lot less awoxing. Sure it's always possible, but there is absolutely a benefit to a full API, provided you use the information.
