Rather then sell bodies to contracts in a trade hub I was wondering if feeding the D/C's does anything to effect the game, I for one welcome our new masters and am hoping to get LP from them (joking), but what is the purpose of the body collection, anybody know yet?

They become conscripts in the Army of Darkness.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Serious response then:

Drifters are Jovians that have been "sleeping" in wormhole space for a few thousand years. We Capsuleers (see: players) disturbed them by blowing up the drones defending them (see: "Sleeper Drones"), salvaging their tech, and creating bastardized versions of it (because we are dumb and don't fully understand it).

Now they have woken up and are pissed.

The problem is... their bodies have decayed / withered away. So now they need new ones.

So they have sent out the Circadians... which are drones. These drones scout for the Drifters and harvest corpses they come across.
The corpses are then reprocessed and "upgraded" to become new bodies for the Sleepers.

tldr; Drifters are space zombies with access to doomsday weapons.

edit: here is a short video that touches on what I described above.

It was meant to mark the beginning of a new lore storyline. Unfortunately, given the competitive nature of PvE content in this game, any lore feature gets scrutinized by players from the ISK/hour viewpoint. If it's good, it gets farmed to death. If it's not, it gets tossed into the pile with the rest.

But someday we might be able to get a Drifter pet or a space fedo companion for some Aurum and feed corpses to it instead.

That about sums it up.

The other lore issue that might be a way point is that The One, which is a virtual being created by two Sleepers that has no REAL body in the clone vats or whatever holding space, is, or could be creating more like themselves and they would need bodies. As one of the Sleeper requirements was that ALL sleepers needed real bodies and that creating virtual "beings" like The One was an abomination and outlawed, etc, etc. So corpse stealing could be a way around this sort of 'awakening'. But lore wise afaik all actual Sleepers already have bodies.

Have you heard anything I've said?

You said it's all circling the drain, the whole universe. Right?

That's right.

Had to end sometime.

*The Other, not "The One".

One of the Others jumped into Jamyl Sarum's head during her first death, and lead her to (iirc, I never read Templar One) authorize the raids on Sleeper Enclaves to extract the first generation of Dust implants from the preserved living bodies of Sleepers whose minds were living in the Enclave VR, and fusing their idenity with those of the Dusties that got the implants. It also made her do other things that I don't know of.

However, it was trapped insider her head and couldn't move freely as the infomorph it was. It's my belief that Matash Raish's entosis on Jamyl's titan was (deliberately or not) an extraction of the Other, and she was killed by the Drifters to clean up any evidence that another consciousness resided in her head once it had escaped.

ARC, Makato Priano, and the rest of the lore guys know shittons about this stuff. Go wander into the Intergalactic Summit or Eve Fiction sections of the forums and see what you learn!

I find it both ironic and disturbing that the opening quote of that video is
"the story isn't real until the players become a part of it"
Which is quite literal in this case seemingly.
