Dominix now useless for mission running?

Hi all,

I just started back up after a 4 year hiatus and, predictably, things have changed. My primary money making activity back in the day was low-intensity L4 mission running with a Dominix. I'd set up a cap stable armor tank, aggro everything in the mission and let the drones slowly chew through everything. It was not the fastest isk, as all of my DPS was from drones and this was before a lot of the new drone modules came out, but it was consistent and I could do it as a side-activity while doing other things that might take my concentration.

I see that they've changed the AI logic to shoot at drones a lot more. A LOT more. I get into one mission where the moment I drop drones, all enemy ships would drop targeting me and immediately start targeting the drones. Sooo... being a logical person, I try to adapt.

* I tried using sentry drones. Better, but the need to deploy, shoot, return to drone bay, repeat resulted in roughly zero dps output. I couldn't even break tank on some battlecruisers.

* I tried remote repping my sentry drones. Nope, repping couldn't keep up with rat damage output.

* I tried plinking each ship with a popgun to get some aggro before releasing drones. Better, but eventually one ship would get a bug up it's ass about drones and shoot at them immediately after I dropped them.

* Thinking that maybe simply plinking them for tiny damage wasn't enough, I went ahead and swapped some stuff around and put large guns in the highs to try to do 'real' damage to keep aggro. No dice. As the dominix is specced for drones and I have a pile of drone skills, my gun damage was inconsequential and got more dead drones.

Back in the day, keeping the drones alive took some work, but it wasn't like this. Now, I seriously can't even get them out of the bay before they're shot at.

Sooo, I'm torn between giving up on the Dominix as a mission runner and just giving up on Eve again. Before I do either, I'd like some feedback.

Are there any Dominix mission runners out there? How do you keep your drones alive?

By staying the **** away from the rats. Look up the new domi bonuses and also the large micro jump drive.

Wardens can have an optimal up to 115km.

MJD to 100km, drop Wardens, most rats will be dead before they reach you. Just need enough tank to survive the rats that agro when you first land.

Sometimes the aggro bugs out. Ejecting from your ship (in a safe pos preferably) and reboarding sometimes works. At least it works in anomalies I know

Hello, welcome back to Eve and yeah, a lot has changed in the past couple of years.

As for Drones, the NPC's will target the same size Drone and larger. In other words, small hull class NPC's will target light Drones and larger, medium hull class NPC's will target medium Drones and larger, etc.

I have found to make drone management easier, I'll take out all the small and medium hull class NPC's first and then launch Drones. If a small EWAR NPC get's under my guns, I'll quickly dispatch the Drones, take out the EWAR NPC and then recall the Drones asap. Basically I do that until I've knocked out all the small and medium hull class NPC's, then I launch Drones and let them go wild.

I don't really know any tactics for Drone boats since I mainly fly Minmatar gunships.

2 medium shield rr can keep a t2 sentry alive, have 1 armor for just in case and fit a sensor booster.

t2 auto-targeting system, shoot a couple random rats to get room aggro and than press fire without having to target anything.
A parrot trained to press f1 every 20 seconds recommended.

Auto-targeting missiles are also an option, press f1 every 3 min.... Cruise missile dmg application to elite frigates is horrible thou, fit application modules and preferably dualbox or triplebox those missile boats... bigger chance to volley trough npc reps.

tbh there are better afk isk sources than running missions in a domi and doing afk stuff in high sec does not really count as playing the game in the first place .____.
join a (preferably nullsec) corp that has industrialists and pve guys in it, they tell you what to produce/ trade for the corp (low maintenance, instant buy on site for ok price) and what are the best afk-ish setups and tactics for the region, you get a fitted ship with newbro discount and 2 days later make 2-3x more isk with less effort.

You can easily use a different ship, mate.

Kudos for trying different ways!
Don't let past failures make you miserable!

You have tried! That's more than most do! :D

With large micro jump drive it is simple as that:
warp in, bookmark, launch mobile tractor unit, jump 100 km from rats.
Depending on rats launch proper sentry drones. With one T2 drone scope rig and 3 omni directional tracking computers you have 150 optimal with wardens, over 100 km optimal with curators or bouncers and about 100 km optimal + falloff for garde. Use your guns to kill small targets, burning straight toward you (no problem with tracking) and keep your sentry drones work on bigger targets. After Large micro jump drive is cooled down, jump back, switch scripts to tracking instead of optimal and tank / finish what is left of NPC.. 6 minutes (LMJD there and back again) - and all waves in the pocket should be clear. Pick up what is best inside MTU, scope MTU and go to the next room. Eve-survival site is your friend to find out, what damage type must be applied in what mission. Pick set of drones accordingly.

might sound odd

but try using an e-war module on a rat
it should move you up the ai targeting priority

afaik the npc ai picks tragets based on one of the following things
dps source
reps activation
e-war activation
size

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Changing my Domi from a brawler to a sentry sniper with MWD seems to do the trick!

MJD not MWD - they are different. MJD = Micro Jump Drive.

Although I have both fitted on mine.

Glad it's working out for you! Now go forth and enjoy your (admittedly slightly less afk) mission running

Confirming this. I used to run two perma RR Domi's for missioning. One had a target painter the other assigned it's drones to the target paint one. My sentry drones hardly ever got targeted and if so was just a case of recall them and redeploy. Admittedly this was a about two years ago so YMMV.

PS - Handily could just RR the drones too on the fly instead of paying at station or refitting for RR.

No, not even.

afk was just nerfed, which was a good thing.

Adapt.

side question: is there any option for brawling ship/fits in PVE now? Is it possible with all this e-war + drone aggro?

Last time i have tried it (i was 2013 or 2014 if i'm not mistaken) i got dumped to 0 scanres and barely got away from rats in my Hyperion being unable to kill anything. That was pre-MJD era.
