Sorry I'm a newbie. Why the heck do people capitalize the game title?

Yes, I saw the locked thread, but "It's capitalized in the logo," isn't a valid argument: Online is also capitalized in the logo, but no one follows that practice.

Also, no one uses "NIKE," "SONY," or "THE LEGEND OF ZELDA" despite their logos being all caps. If people typed every logo like the official version we'd see things like P0RTAL, "R✩" (Rockstar Games), and "λ²" (Halflife 2).

Is this just a meme (in the traditional sense, not "Internet meme") that spread without people questioning or understanding? Or is there a more specific reason. Personally, I can't help but think of this every time I type the game name, to the effect of "Is this right? Why would it be? But everyone does it this way."

For now, I will continue to hazard to use "EVE" as that's what CCP's blog uses. But I must admit it gives me pause every time I do.

Technically you are correct, and it should be Eve, since it is the name of the natural wormhole that brought us to New Eden. Either that or EVE is short for a much longer name for that wormhole.

But the most acceptable answer you're going to get is: It's just the way it is. The EVE Online trademark is all caps. The logo is all caps. It's been this way since the game's release I think.

But again, you do have a point.

Use whichever you want, I don't think anyone will correct you.

EVE - I'm not going to go through the chronicles to find this particular bit of info, but I think they call it the EVE gate because those 3 letters are all that they found on some of the wreckage. 20,000+ years have passed, so from our characters' point of view the name is part of ancient relics that they found floating in space millennia later. For all we know it could be the same trope as in the first Star Trek movie with VGER (they could have called it Steve, for example).

EVE - CCP has also stylized the E on almost all their logos to the three horizontal lines, and they can't do that with a lowercase e, so they're using it wherever they can.

Eve - CCP has ret-conned some of the lore to say that the Terrans named the gate Eve and (retcon: ) the corresponding departure gate in the Solar system Adam.

EvE - as above, some of the PVP'ers have starting using this abbreviation to explain that the game involves everyone vs. everyone PVP.

Seems to me the most grammatically correct methodology is to use EVE when referring to the gate & Eve when referring to the game—as with any other game. I'll refrain from judging those who do otherwise.

I honestly can't remember why I started doing that, but with me there's usually a visual cue of some kind that resonates then that's that. It was not "vs." for me. I wonder if I saw some old graphic or something in that format? Or something from the interface itself? GAH! ok now it's bugging the hell out of me....
