For the love of the Game - Exploring a virtual culture

In light of the recent events, and between the tensions on this forum.. I wanted to share something very special to me. My anthropology teacher last year had asked us to write a paper that described a culture that we were apart of. And I was completely stumped on what to do, until it hit me - Eve. As an early 2004 adopter - I love this game, and i know many of you do too. As we continue to grow older and as the game has changed - i felt the need to record my experience before it slips away. This was a very unique, and timely opportunity to do so.

I was also met with the challenge that many of us are still faced with, describing eve online. I guess you could call this my attempt to do so.

I hope you all take the time to read it, and take the time to reflect on your own experiences within eve and just how special this game is too you. Fair warning, i did review it twice, but some errors may have slipped through the cracks - I apologize for any.

Seriously though, not a bad little spiel for an undergrad survey class paper.

Glad to see some exposure.

Thanks. Smile

Great read, thank you.

What recent events?

e: I assume you're referring to something other than the AG tears that have plagued GD, of late

no you're right - there's a bunch of tension between player groups right now. Thought it best to put it aside and remember that we're a part of this universe.

For me its already weird to see how much Eve has changed since i quitted 2 years ago and came back a few days ago. Cant even start to imagine how much has changed after 11 years. I started playing Eve in 2011, but no updates then changed my Experience as much as the recent updates. Very great read though !

Thank you, i'm happy to have brought some insight. At the very core - we haven't changed. But the game has, some changes for the better and some for the worst. So much blood sweat and tears from both the players and the developers have contributed to this. Its honestly one of the only games on the market that can say that. Crazy Feeling.

I am disappointed. Its like a longer panegyrical post. Where is ethnographic part in it?
Describing a culture should be more methodical:
Should describe demographic, behaviors, rituals, language, preferences, products of that culture. Not only players but also developers.

For example CSM. Its a product of that culture. Ruined Monument in Jita is a product of that culture. Why they were created? What can be said about people who created it.
