Advanced Railgun ammo dilemma...

Well, I got me some hyper expensive Federation Navy Antimatter rounds... yeesh... hyper expensive, and did some testing.

They are very nice rounds at medium short to short medium ranges... call it 10K to 30K. Closer than 10K the Javelin is the better round as it tracks better and just hammers down, literally. Brutal kinetic damage. From 25K up to 30K it's about a toss up with Spike but favors FNA on Frigates, Spike on Destroyers+.

All of this is just empirical impressions over a lot of poor Guriestas that didn't really volunteer for the tests. So, giving credit where it's due, thanks to my test subjects.

The ammo change out, if managed with target changes isn't so bad but it's a lot more work. Do-able with NPC's, but against other players probably suicidal. You'd be better off either choosing to kite or close which would automatically choose your ammo for you.

So tactically, it's probably best to build your railgun ship for Javelin range combat and put in scripts on your sensors that can let your also do long range sniping when you get the chance.

Thanks to everyone for your input on the thread, it's been very useful.

Controlling the range in an engagement is required when using blasters and railguns.

If you want a more flexible range in an engagement, you want to look at projectiles and Minmatar ships, or Amarr ships and lasers (scorch crystals rock).

Yeah, but I'm trained in Small and Medium rails to 5 and rail specialization on them to use the Tech 2 variants for both. I'm working on large now.

The trick on smaller targets with larger rails is really about long range. At 50 km small target can't touch me and I vaporize them with a single Medium Rail volley.

Small rails I can use at any range up to the maximum the rail/ammo allows. Against larger ships you have to get in under their guns, almost to blaster range. So staying out of 'blaster' range, speed tanking, and using Javelin S ammo is quite the dance. If done gracefully, you can take down even PvE BC's as long as they don't have missles. If they have missles, you just run. If they start at very long range, you just run. David vs. Goliath is all about deciding to engage or flee. If the circumstances are right, you have a decent shot at winning, if not (to quote Monte Python) Run Awaaay!

At this juncture, I thought I'd offer a good, easy to make, fudge recipe:

Ingredients
2 cups white sugar
1/2 cup cocoa
1 cup milk
4 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Butter a large dinner plate. Set aside.

Combine sugar, cocoa and milk in a medium saucepan. Stir to blend, then bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Reduce heat and simmer. Do not stir again.

Place candy thermometer in pan and cook until temperature reaches 238 degrees F (114 degrees C). If you are not using a thermometer, then cook until a drop of this mixture in a cup of cold water forms a soft ball (soft ball stage.) Feel the ball with your fingers to make sure it is the right consistency. It should flatten when pressed between your fingers.

Remove from heat. Add butter or margarine and vanilla extract. Beat with a wooden spoon until the fudge loses its sheen. Do not under beat. (You may add a 1/4 cup of chopped pecans before you stir...if you're SMART! Cherries if you're a girl.)

Pour onto prepared dinner plate and let cool. Cut into how you like it.

I feel like this is missing an important ingredient. I canna put a finger on it. I guess just roll with it as is.
