Question about data/relic sites

TL,DR: How do I find data and relic sites without sleepers?

Hey guys

I recently decided to dip my toe in to exploration for the first time. So I bought a cheap T1 scanning frigate, gave it a cheap basic fit, and headed for the first worm hole I found.

My first session (3-4 hours) exploring went very well. I quickly learned that any data and relic sites with the words 'Forgotten' or 'Unsecured' meant there were sleepers there and they were to be avoided. And I quickly learned to run like hell when other players probes start closing in on you mid hack!

I found plenty of non sleeper relic and data sites during this first session though, and enjoyed learning how the hacking mini game worked. I did ok with ISK too, taking about 50mil from 3 or 4 worm holes - I don't know if that is good or bad but I was happy with it and enjoyed it.

However, 3 sessions later, and I have yet to find a single wormhole with a data or relic site that is not Forgotten or Unsecured! So basically I'm entering one worm hole after another, finding no sites for me to hack, and moving on, hour after hour lol.

I don't really want to bring my main ship into wh space yet to fight sleepers as I'm still learning the ropes and wouldn't enjoy loosing my main ship at this stage

So my question is this: is there a way, or a rule of thumb to find sites without sleepers, or is it purely random and I have no choice but to carry on scanning down dozens of signatures and hoping to find a non Forgotten or unsecured site?

Completely random from what I know. Also the Sleepers are hard to kill and even a proper 'combat ship' might have trouble against them.

It's not completely random ... pirate hacking sites spawn only in wormhole classes 1-3, those with just "unknown" space in the description text. If you spot a "dangerous" or "deadly" it's class 4-6 which have only sleeper sites. Though within a wormhole the sites are random, so you may find "empty" low classes because of that or because other players where faster than you.

I'm my own NPC alt.

You might increase your odds by looking in a less traveled part of high-sec so other day-trippers aren't getting to the WH before you are.

Also, be aware that hunters may already be in the hole and have all the signatures already scanned. Be ready to warp at any sec - especially while you are running the mini-game.

You run the forgotten/unsecured sites for the sleeper loot more than the data/relic cans. They will start getting very hard as you increase in class.

Just because this is New Citizens Q&A...

Did you know that you don't have to go into a WH to explore?

They can be in any security level of space. Many of the sites you find in Hi/Low/Null are totally empty of NPCs.

I do this on an alt quite often.

I tend to look for outlying areas of hisec, away from starter systems to probe down holes from. You aren't going to minimise the amount of wh residents running these sites by doing this for obvious reason, but you will minimise the number of daytrippers competing with you.

Sometimes you hit the bar and sometimes the bar hits you...

You're not the only one diving wormholes and hacking. A lot of other people have figured out there are shiny things in wormholes.

Other people make nice targets.
