Steam Account + Controller help

Hi all,
I currently play Eve through the launcher and not through Steam itself, but now have a steam controller that I would like to use, but cannot seem to get it to work.
I have tried adding the launcher to steam, as a non-steam game, but that doesnt seem to like it either, the only way the controller seems to work in Eve is without Steam being logged in - but then have no configuration, so -

1) Is there any way to link my Eve account to Steam, so I can play through steam to get the controller to work?
2) Does anyone know if the controller can be used in Eve, without going through Steam?

There doesn't seem to be any definitive answers I can find on this, so any help is greatly appreciated,

EVE isn't the type of game to be played on a controller sadly

Yes you can, its not very good though.

You can set the Steam controller up with a default set of keybinds that it uses when you aren't playing a game through Steam. This is done through the Steam settings> Controller config.

You really don't want to use a controller for this game. Not even the Steam one.

I'll give it a try tonight and see if I can get it to work.

That said, I can't imagine playing EVE with the controller though.
