Harvestable Gas Clouds

I've been preparing myself for gas mining for about a week now. Fitting out my venture, reading up on forums of how to be safe, saving the 24 mil for the skill, and getting my scanning high enough that I can find the gas sites in under a minute once I'm there. So, needless to say, I was pretty pissed when five minutes ago I found my first gas site and had no idea how to start mining it. I spent the whole 20 minutes banging my head against a wall lol. I tried three different gas sites, two of which were sizeable, and I couldn't find a way to mine them. I'm thinking they weren't harvestable? So my question is: A) am I just ********, or B) are not all gas sites harvestable?

They should be harvestable.

The gas clouds may have not been showing up on your overview? If so, you'll probably have to add them. I believe they are classified as large collidable objects, don't quote me on that though. I personally just have a tab with everything on it and use that to find the gas clouds.

After you find it in the overview, just target it and turn on your harvesters like you would for regular mining.

Hey Sheeth, yea I had "harvestable gas clouds" set on my overview and nothing showed up when i was near the clouds. That's why I'm thinking they weren't harvestable. It's a head scratcher.

Load an "All/Everything" overview, lock one of the clouds, switch to your normal overview.
Right-click on the cloud "likely in space" and click on add to overview.

There should be two or three cores in the gas cloud that you can select. When the cores are exhausted the site will disappear. Orbit them at 500.

"harvestable cloud" is the item to select in the overview. Right clicking on the tab and selecting "all" as mentioned above is a good idea if you still don't see anything.

There are harvestable clouds in mining missions if you want some practice in HS.

Add it to your overview or use a survey scanner. Lock and mine like normal

better yet, drop a jetcan (or abandon a drone) in the middle of the cloud and orbit THAT at 500m.

keeps you safer (not 'safe', just 'er') from pesky torp bombers.

Why would orbiting inside of the could be safer than orbiting the cloud itself?

Because the cloud will unloak things

Dropping a can and orbiting it at 500m is beyond stupid. It allows the bomber to warp straight on top of you.

Manually fly into the center of the cloud, then "orbit at current distance (0)" with your MWD on.
That will keep you moving at insane speed while still being in range of the cloud.

or orbit without your MWD, you'll be inside the cloud and not have a can your enemy can warp to.
I find the speed to be more secure though.
