Is Icelandic language easy to learn?

I would be interested to hear from people who work and live in Iceland and they are not native Icelandic language speakers that how hard it was to learn Icelandic language? How long did it take that you could take care of your every day life without using English? How did you learn Icelandic language? Did you use audio recordings or take Icelandic language courses or something like that? Has there been any funny misunderstandings when you misspelled a word?

The old runes and basic grammer of modern Icelandic I was able to grasp but executing them verbally is hard as hell.
Then again I wasn't born American but was raised by them and ended up speaking english fluently.
So I thought to myself,maybe I should learn exactly how children learn their home languages.
I think I stumbled onto something because it's working with my spanish efforts.
So perhaps getting a hold of icelandic childrens activity books and stories will help you along. Good luck and happy learning.

The difficulty of learning icelandic will depend on what languages you already know. The more similar it is to your native tongue, the easier it will be. I'm going to assume you're a Native English Speaker.

The widely accepted language difficulty scale comes from America's Foreign service institute, which rates icelandic as a category IV language (for English speakers). There are 5 categories. So Icelandic is one of the tougher ones, not easy (for you). Sad
