When can we expect to see off-grid links be replaced by on-grid ones?

I seem to recall that CCP wanted these out fairly soon and though I know they are busy getting citadels working, will this rebalancing of links be out sometime this year?

I would be surprised.

Good news though, if you do your homework you don't have to worry about links.

Better yet get a t3d, probe down the links.....and dunk the crap out of them. Simple.

And if that is not an option, don't take a fight in the linked system.

You shouldnt be. AOE links confirmed. Command dessi's a step in that direction. When are they coming? Who knows.
As for your link counters Roll

They may be waiting until after the changes to the Rorq go into effect before changing links. Pilots are going to need a better reason to deploy one of those in a belt than just gang links. Especially when an Orca can do almost as good a job, doesn't need to root itself to the spot and cost a lot less.

never the only thing on grid links will change are fights in low/null/wh, mission runners that use links, and incursions.

your empire fights rather war dec or station brawlers will have a neutral for their links that you can do nothing about

Yes, please fly around in a T3D with probing rigs and the appropriate probe implants to be able to get a hit on a T3C with ECCM scripts. Oh and don't mind that it still is going to take you several passes to get to them, and pray they don't cloak.

More to the point is when will we see off grid remote repping ? cos that needs to be implemented first.

Since those links will have to be sitting on gates/stations with the combat ships they support... You are wrong.

The imediate gains will be that you now KNOW that they have links, which may affect your decision to engage or not.

Secondly, once identified, those boosting characters can't be used anymore for neutral logi or scouting without you being aware they are in system as support or hunting you.

Third: Those ships can be bumped out of range (may or not be useful depending on area of effect of the link bonuses, we shall see when time comes) or ganked. I can picture a lot of link ships sitting on gates and stations being ganked by CODE. or Goonies, because they can.

So what do you fit? A couple links on a tengu? It takes command processors to fit more than one....so you are implying that you would do what to my t3d?

So apparently everyone has an unprobable tengu alt.

And if the links are cloaked.....they don't work. You see, I don't have to find your links. Just scare you into thinking I will.

An alternative solution would be a complete overhaul of fleet boosting mechanics.

1. Erase all specialized link ships. In other words, remove all boosting bonuses and all links restrictions

2. Allow any ship in the game to fit links, rebalance pg/cpu requirements accordingly

3. Remove the 'fleet/wing/squad' booster roles --> everybody with a link mod gives boosts

4a. Allow boosts from every fleet member to stack, rebalance so the resulting max boosts are similar to today. In other words, 10 squad members with +3% speed links each give +30% speed to each squad member

4b. Alternatively, tweak the new mechanics with stacking penalties or 'ceilings' so that having full squads of 10 members does not become mandatory

Positive result: links finally become an interesting mechanic, FCs choose either fits with links or fits with an extra module doing something else, depending on the situation.

Negative result: mass rage from everybody that trained links (though skill extraction could mitigate this)

Another, more simple solution would be simply to make links targeted modules.

Not sure why CCP didn't do this ages ago, would make flying links an actual, active fleet role (like logi, or ewar).

Before I laugh a long time at this comment I'll give you the chance to tell me what kind of ship you're going to use to bump someone +5000 KM.

That's a lot of training time.

The game was designed for links to affect the whole grid. This idea of AoE links is kinda stupid. While your at it, if anyone in the fleet travels too far away i guess they should automatically get dropped from the fleet also.

Like I was implying: We have no idea if on-grid Boosting will be just that, need-to-be on-grid, or if Links will have an area of effect, and if so, what range will they have. If the range is limited enough (a few kilometers) then bumping will be quite an option.

Or maybe on-grid Boosting will act like a (neutral) assistance module, and give a suspect flag. That could make things interesting too.

About 6 months. I know, I have a perfect booster.

Not really an issue in itself, actually, if you'd have the option to either play with 11 mil unallocated SP or sell them for 6 bil ISK or so net profit.

The real issue is whether players would like the change or not, and how many would rage anyway without even giving a new system a try.

My point is, significant stats bonuses coming from a single (or a handful) of ships just because they're still alive somewhere in system (or even on-grid) is a dumb game mechanic.

Come to think of it, the targeted links solution would be the best. Add player skill on both sides: the linker targeting the right people and trying to evade enemy dps, the opponents trying to disrupt him or blow him up.

More options and (much, much) more actual gameplay. There's a reason most boosters are alts: currently, the damn ships don't really do anything the whole fight.
