An item that forwards an earmarked mail message to the individual that activates the beacon. Beacon can be placed in any container either as a single unit or broken up into multiple pieces. Beacons that are segmented like this can only relay the mail message once the pieces are recombined.

Here is an example of the mail beacon message you could be forwarded.

Yes, messages can already be left in the notes section of a bookmark, however there are problems with this system.

-You must dock up at a station to transfer bookmarks into hold for transport.
-Bookmarks found in containers or cargo loot don't automatically cue the player recovering them that they contain long messages scrolled in notes section.
-Bookmarks require marking a section of space which may be problematic to some players in terms of opsec.

Including a small beacon system (item that can be placed in space, jet cans, anchored containers, ship holds, etc.) can streamline the process of leaving messages for people.

-Under this system a player can remotely change the messages that get forwarded to players that activate the beacons. Process is done within the mail client by viewing which mail is earmarked for transmit.
-A (delayed/immediate) notification system may also be set up (or turned off) for when someone activates your message beacon.
-A beacon system also allows for segmentation of the beacon. This process of putting pieces back together to receive a message opens up many exciting player narrative possibilities.

It's a player sandbox tool. Person composes a mail message and earmarks it to be forwarded to anyone that activates their [player name's] beacon(s).

These can be used to relay any number of messages in any number of contexts. e.g. treasure hunts, gate depot propaganda containers, messages to people that blow up your ship and loot the cargo, sharing the divine word of Bob, etc.

The idea seems to carry some weight. Would be interesting to hear more details

It makes so much sense to be in game..

Typing up individual messages to place in cans seemed too problematic from a server side storage perspective. Making a [player name's] beacon (similar to 'celestial' [player name's] corpse) that connects to the centralized mail server when queried for an earmarked mail seemed to simplify the process.

So essentially by recording or typing a message and then dropping it off into space, my hope would be somebody finds it and that its meaningful content to them? Would i have to point them in a direction, give pointers, give clues etc?

It's a pure sandbox tool that people can use however they see fit. Wormhole roleplayers could use it to drop off beacons that forward the glorious scriptures of Bob.

The details of how many messages can be earmarked and sent in one daisy chained mail is mechanic that needs to be discussed. Preferably, I like one mail to be forwardable. There are already word count restrictions on mail.

I could see alot of use for this...

Its not unlike leaving a cargo can anchored in space but if you could set them (or theres a "beacon variant") you can warp too it might be usefull for wormholes that are for sale or whatever... "WANT TO BUY THIS WORMHOLE? MAIL XYZ!" or something

@FireFrenzy

The ability to update the message you auto forward (through the mail client) to the beacon without having to visit the container (remapping the WH chain if something collapsed) could be a nice quality of life feature in this case.

+1 Nice idea
I like it, if taken to the extreme this could be the beginning of Player created Missions.

Ahh.. So something like you get when you get an escalation from an anomaly just for individuals or groups?

Could be used for pve where you get some puzzle pieces that you have to fiddle together and you get maybe a Gila copy or something else.

Sounds interesting.

(Player has placed ISK sum into escrow for NPC pirates that respond to beacon activation. Your mission has begun whether you choose to accept it or not.)
