Some friends and I wanted to make some content for the community. So, we made a podcast! Welcome to the PODCast Eve's bad pvp podcast and more!

Hi Charley.....,

I'm about 5 minutes into the cast, and I think there are a couple of things that struck me more-or-less straight away.

The length of the piece, at around 50 minutes, seems a little long to me. That is, if you've enough material for one 50 minute show, might it not be better to have, say, 3 casts at 20 minutes?

You guys clearly have a good rapport between you which comes across very well. It takes a few minutes to get the nerves over with, but that's normal. So that's a good plus.

The intro music was a bit too long for me; I kept wondering when the show was going to start! Also, it was a bit downbeat perhaps? Nice piece though.

The introductions were quite good, varied and interesting.

Have a stand-out piece for each cast. You might have done this, but maybe I'm not far enough in.

Have a special guest. Someone who would be recognised by your target audience and who has something unique to contribute.

Edit out some of the gaps at the start. It's just hesitation really, but it makes the piece really choppy.

Have an ad or two to break up the sections (you did map out the whole cast, didn't you?). You can advertise your Corp/Alliance, anything. Have definite time-lengths for the sections, and stick to them. At 22 minutes, you say 'Moving on...', but one of your fellow panellists signals that he wants to continue. That's ok, if it works, but then you continue the conversation yourself, all thoughts of 'moving on' having disappeared.

Now 14 minutes or so in and a good section around FozzieSov. The conversation is flowing nicely, but I've now lost any sense of who's speaking! My fault I guess.

Sound quality is good.

So, this is really conversations around your experiences in EVE, with opinions arising in a natural way. Why not invite your listeners to comment on what they've heard? That's ok for a first cast, but if you cover everything in the first cast, you'll have not much left for subsequent programmes.

Have some stuff that's bang up to date; devblogs and stuff being discussed on EVE-O forums might fill that slot. We want to know what you think and hear your opinions about the topics of the day, too.

So, yeah, a good first cast. For me, make it shorter and more structured and you have an interesting product.

Hope this helps in some way.

Hi again,

I'm at 43 minutes now, and about to log.

It's a much warmer, more flowing experience this far in, and I've an idea that this is largely due to the subject matter - ECM. This is the kind of thing that makes casts interesting and enjoyable. So, have the occasional information piece and add a dash of controversy to spice it up. There was a good section about Skill Injectors earlier. Liked that.

Keep it up!

Hi,

I couldn't leave it like that, so came back and finished listening to the cast.

Why no outro? It seemed to end rather abruptly!

Sometimes it's a good idea to script certainly the intro and outro. The trick is to make it sound unscripted, so it should be written the way whoever voices it usually speaks, but it must achieve certain things. The Intro must make the listener want to continue listening and the Outro should leave a feeling of satisfaction and make your audience look forward to the next cast.

It's not easy, I grant you, but you have the makings of a good product here and if you can make it regular rather than frequent, I would certainly listen in to the next one.

Hi Sasha,

I am very glad to have your responses they are very in depth and thorough. I thank you a lot for listening to the Cast. There are many issues with my audio editting I agree whole heartedly. We are still trying to feel out how to do this podcast. You're feedback will be by far some of them most useful tools we have and I will bring it up with the guys.

As pertaIning to the plan of the podcast we did lay out the podcast with things we wanted to talk about for this cast. We are doing the same for every one we do next. I did not think of doing ads just yet because I was going off my personal tastes of podcasts where I just like listening to the characters of the casts interacting with each other.

Personally I enjoy longer casts from podcasts I listen to, however I will ask around of the listeners and see what they want. I will try and make it so not every cast is an hour long. But, I will certainly take more time into hashing out this weeks episode and try and make it flow better. As for the Outro that was do to my bad editing and so on. I am still learning how to do things. It took me 2 hours just to figure out how to get the intro song how I wanted it and it still wasn't great.

I want to thank again for taking the time to type all of this up for us. I will try and take your advice and incorporate it into the upcoming podcasts.

Hi back, Charley,

Personal taste is hard to get round, I guess, and that's what some of my comments showed up. You're right; I've also heard long podcasts, and the good thing about audio is that you can have it on in the background and get on with other stuff. Maybe I haven't the patience.

I'm a freelance voice over artist, but my main stuff with EVE is voicing the work of James 315. I had a lot of the work on SoundCloud last year, but deleted the account when I took an 8 month break from the game. I returned recently and started it up again. It's good to talk!

I understand about the editing. When I first started editing my own pieces, I hated it. As time went on though, I realised that it's in the editing that the performance is really created. You start off with the raw materials and end up with a finished product. Does take time though. Do you use Audacity/Adobe Audition/cubase-sonar-logic? I'd be interested to know.

I'm about to do a new piece for James; I'll maybe send you a link. It probably isn't your kind of stuff, but it's always good to get a 'play' on SoundCloud ;-)

So, yeah; keep it going Charley, and maybe send me a link in-game when you're ready. I always post with my main...

I use Audacity! It seems to flow very well and easy to use. I am open for suggestions and sorry for the delayed responses I have been at work most of the day.

First off as Chair has already said thank you for taking the time to give us some in depth feedback! We wanted to keep the first one pretty loose to see how it was received and then place some structure to it. I am personally excited about Episode 2 and would love to continue to hear feedback from the community.

One of your biggest points, along with ones to help us flow better :), I think is the ability to engage with the community and see if we are talking about things they like. I think that will be a very powerful tool to keep producing conversations and discussions on issues, concerns, mechanics etc.

Anyways Just a short and sweet thank you again for the listen and feedback o7

You're welcome!

And Charley - Audacity is a powerful editing tool. You can't go wrong there! Because we work just with audio, sound is all we have to woo the audience. Luckily we don't have to worry about video too. I get what you say about delays caused by RL jobs. Until recently it was the bane of my life too. Now that I have more time, I hope to further polish my own recordings.

Make it available for download, I can't listen to this at work... I usually put all my podcasts on my phone and take them with me... I can't do that with yours.

Fixed that for you! Sorry I thought it was enabled off the bat.
