NPC aggro

I usually run Forsaken Hubs with a Tengu and a carrier. The Tengu warps in slightly ahead of the carrier and takes all the aggro.

After the first few waves, the frigs spawn and over the last few days they have been aggroing the carrier not the Tengu, with all subsequent aggro going on the carrier also.

Did the aggro mechanics change, or is it just another bug ?

Working as intended. Shouldn't really be that surprising given CCP modded rat AI a long time ago to start swap targeting occasionally rather than blindly imitating MechCommander level AI. Where have you been?

"Tomahawks?"

"----in' A, right?"

"Trouble is, those things cost like a million and a half each."

"----, you pay me half that and I'll hump in some c4 and blow the ---- out of it my own damn self."

It appears the Nullbear only lifted his head out of the ISK trough when there was a problem

No, this was not happening a week ago.

Don't just make assumptions, makes you look like an ass

This isn't happening occasionally, its every single time. Something changed during the last couple of weeks.

Fit an ECM burst on your Tengu. Should help to keep the aggro on it.

Paint your picture on the prow. If that doesn't work, nothing will.

As long as the tale of the hunt is told by the hunter, and not the lion, it will favor the hunter.

No one is making assumptions here but you.
The DEVs did change the NPC AI some years ago to go after things that posed the greatest threat to them (rather than the first ship that aggros).
Many player experiments showed that drones were rated pretty high as a threat along with Electronic Warfare and Remote Repair.

If you haven't experienced this kind of NPC behavior much (if at all) then it probably means that there was a bug of some kind in the NPCs that kept them from performing the way they were supposed to... and the DEVs have only recently corrected it.

Enjoy "catching up" with the rest of the game. Twisted

hell new spawns always had a chance to aggro something different. Sounds like RNG being R.

I wouldn't be so quick in pointing to the AI changes that happened a few years ago. The majority of nullsec sites (DEDs and Anoms) seem to have none of that working yet.

@OP, you experienced something like a "bug" or "unlucky". It happens every once in a while and it'll go back to "normal" (0.0 NPCs not giving a **** about anything but the first target) next downtime at the latest lol.

Yes, I am serious.

He asked if the act of them switching targets was a bug or intended mechanics, so my point was that if they are switching he is in fact encountering the later rather than the former. If null NPC's are not switching targets like they should be, that would be a bug, even if it's been like that for a couple of years despite other NPC's switching targets correctly.

In all fairness, I will admit that I have heard that null NPC's have consistently retained their old behavior patterns while other places in Eve saw NPC's more commonly adopting the behavior of changing targets mid-engagement and prioritizing certain targets over others (drones, EWAR, reppers, etc.). So it is possible that the OP is only learning of this now if he has never encountered NPC's using proper AI behaviors.

I don't think this is as complex as what some of the posts are suspecting.

My corp mate and I go on roams looking for certain combat sites as they provide some salvage materials we need and use.

I have an armor tanked Cruiser, my corp mate has a shield tanked BattleCruiser. The NPC's usually go after me, possibly for a variety of reasons (take out the smaller ship first, etc. etc.) Most likely is that since I'm armor tanked, my shields are usually down, making me appear to be an easier target. I do about 2/3 the damage the BC does but I keep aggro nicely.

The point is, just adjust your tactics to the NPC's. I had to switch from a charge based armor repair system to a power based one, the charges were costing me as much as I was getting from the Combat site sweeps! Now I don't care if I have aggro or not.

Just as a point of understanding, Remote repair is a 'healer' activity and in nearly every other MMO, healers get killed first. Healing (either self or to someone else) is a major aggro bonus. Unlike other MMO's there's no way to wipe the aggro or seriously reduce it in EVE (at least that I've found).
