How to get past the locking lag?

I ask you, what is the point of having 3100 scan resolution when the "post lock target blinking lag" is longer than the actual lock time?

It takes me less than a second to lock a frigate, but it then takes 2 seconds for the lock and warp disruptor to officially activate, putting my lock time up to an effective 3 seconds for having 3100 scan res.

Anyone have this problem, or had and found a way around it?

move closer to the servers?

There's a 2 second minimum due to how the server works on 1 second intervals. If it takes you three seconds even at insane scan resolutions, that's probably latency from you to the servers that tips you over into that third second.

And there's really nothing you can do about it other than access EVE from a computer with lower latency to the sever,

This is why you only fit enough sensor boosters to get you under the 2 second mark.

Fair enough, so basically another perk of playing Eve from Australia.
The game is slower.
Socket closed.
It costs more.
No-one is online.

Yup. Instalocking is the one thing us Aussies really can't do in this game.

On that note, EVE is far more forgiving of crappy pings than, for example, a twitch game like an FPS. I can play EVE just fine, except for the instalocking issue. Try playing Far Cry on a UK server: IMPOSSIBRU!

Good read, all very accurate.

CCP could fix Aussie lag by getting a server here like Riot and Blizzard did but CCP is small time compared to them. But even Hi-Rez studios got a server here for tribes.
But who gives a crap about us there isn't enough Aussies for it to by worth the effort... and the fact that bad lag isn't that bad in Eve compared to say... well, any other mmo, moba or fps.

There's only one server. (well three with Singularity and Duality, but those are test servers) Single shard universe, remember?

If they had another server in Australia it would have to be completely separate from the rest of the EVE. Players.

Unless you are really asking for a whole new EVE universe for the 3k Aussie players.

Any game where you have players split into smaller instances utilizes multiple servers, like say WoW having 100 servers each which support 5k people, or Riot having servers for LoL, reach of which only need to deal with 10 people.

In situations like that, you can physically situate separate servers where they can be used with little or no lag by a certain regions players, and everyone is happy.

But EVE is single sharded. There is only one play server and we all play on it regardless of where we live. Each system or group of systems in the game is run by a server blade at a single physical datacenter, and it processes everything that happens in that system for everyone in it. So our ping time, regardless of where we live, is based on the ping to that datacenter.

If CCP were to have servers in Australia, they would either have to be completely separate from the rest of EVE, or if they ran the same systems that the rest of us play in, everyone BUT the Aussies would have the server lag you Aussies do now.

If it is even possible to split hardware in vastly different locations trying to run EVE at once. I suspect there would be major tech problems with that.

You could play on the Chinese server....

After thinking about it, it's probably not in China....

Looks like it is in Shanghai

I think your best bet to improve your ping is to setup a VPN connection to the server. Don't ask me how but I know it can be done and has helped with people that constantly get disconnected, in theory it should also help with latency.

I was not aware there even was a Chinese server, is it full of low-sec macro haulers? I enjoyed blowing them up and watching them get together to retaliate.

Any idea how many payers are on the Chinese server?

I'm fairly sure you need some sort of national individual identification number in order to play on the Chinese Serenity server, can't just sign up without some proxy work, someones identification number, and certain types of accepted payment.

I tried this and my ping actually got worse, mind you, I used the London node of a very 'privacy focused' VPN service (cryptostorm.is). Perhaps a subscription to a UK based VPN would yield better results (note however that using a VPN based in a 'five-eyes' nation is not something you do if privacy is your main concern).
