After recently starting the game and understanding how it works, I've taken a liking to Caldari ships, more so shields and missiles.

However I want to make sure I'm not restrained to only missiles, I also quite like what I've seen of Minmatar ships, so my question is for a secondary damage type, should I train; projectiles for Minmatar or Hybrids for some Caldari/Gallente ?

Pros/Cons and why greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Do both, takes a while...but it breaks up the restriction to one or two racial ships.

Each are in a decent place right now....as far as small weapons are concerned.

Hello,
Laser, Hybrid and projectile share the same support skills, son once you maximise one type, your are not far from being efficient to any other...
minmatar uses both projectile / missile
caldari -> missile / hybrid
gallente -> drone, hybrid
amarr -> laser / drone / missile

Given you have missile skills already, it would be logical to go for Amarr or Minmatar next, as both of them have a reasonable number of missile ships in their line-ups.

Gallente have none except maybe for the stealth bomber.

Gallente ships and weapons are in a good place right now. Keep in mind that Gallente also use drones a LOT.
That said, All races use drones, so good drone skills is a plus for any race. T2 lights is just about mandatory imo.

Minmatar are historically a hard race to train into. They use shields, armor, guns, drones, missiles, speed.
I like ships they have in every hull size. I like them for the utility slots, speed and capless weapons systems.

My opinion:
There's not really a *bad* choice. Both races have a great line up. Since it's YOUR game, you should just pick one that you think might fit your style a little more. Or one that has cool looking ships for you, or any other reason you like.

Keep in mind that the gunnery SUPORT skills will affect all race guns. If you can't pick a clear path just yet, keep pumping up those support skills.

train both

but for the differences

Hybrid guns tend to have good optimal range(aka range to do full dmg) while projectiles have great fall off range(range at not full dmg)

The projectiles make up for this by having extremely small optimal range and massive falloff range, letting you use higher dmg ammo that reduces optimal range with less actual range loss. And allowing you to match the hybrid's gun dmg by having extreme alpha.

The biggest advantage of projectiles is they DON'T use your capacitor to fire. while hybrids(specially on bigger ships) can end up draining your capacitor that you need for shield boost, or propulsion. as a result you need to invest in capacitor rechargers or power relays.

in short, at short range, hybrid blasters win
at short to mid range, autocannons win (plus have amazing tracking)

mid range, railguns win.

mid to long range, artillery wins.

i'd honestly train one, and you'll find that retraining for the other is remarkably fast as they share so many skills.

As others have pointed out, you will eventually cross train launchers, turrets and drones. As a new player, I think you are best to concentrate on depth rather than breadth - get your missile support skills and core fitting skills to level 4 before starting on turrets. Look at the http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Caracal and train Caldari Cruisers to level 4 to take advantage of the hull bonuses. Unlike most Caldari missile boats, the Caracal bonus is not restricted to kinetic missiles so you can choose the damage type that works best for the opponent. When the time comes to move up, don't automatically train for a Drake. A little more effort can get you into a Cerberus or Sacrilege. All of these ships have drone bays and that should be the first secondary weapon system you train. Drones are "in addition to" not "instead of" your missiles.

Depends on what you want to do with them.

Basicely you can say that hybrds>projectiles by quite a bit, however there are 2 ships that break that rule quite badly. If you want to do dessie sized stuff or blitz lvl4s then projectlies are the way to go due to the svipul and the machariel.

Amarr use lasers, which are probably the most powerful weapons on small and medium ships, and some of their T2 ships are actually missile platforms. Also, the Amarr / Caldari pirate faction Sansha's Nation uses shield tanks and lasers.

Projectile weapons, at least medium ones, are in a fairly bad shape unless you're using artilleries, but the hulls that can do so are not many. There's also no Caldari / Minmatar faction ships.

Hybrid weapons are used on many caldari ships and the cal/gal pirate faction Guristas does have some very nice ships.

All in all, Amarr or Gallente would be my next way if i wanted to crosstrain, they open up the most possibilities.

Also, every race and every weapon class have ships that are op, train whatever suits you rp wise. Nothing (bar maybe svipul/confessor) is so broken right now that it is a must train.

Yea, as others have said, train them all.

But let's be realistic, it doesn't happen overnight. Gunnery > Missiles any day.

I'll fit up a missile boat on the test server occasionally just to remind me they are just bad.
