Other than it would be a pretty significant undertaking not only to build the app itself, but also to rework the backend to allow the messages from the device.

So assuming they only hire one guy for Android and iOS. Most Mobile developers cost anywhere from 50k to 100k a year plus benefits in the US. You could outsource it, but no guarantee in quality, and you will need ongoing support if you want to keep it up to date as the game changes. Best to hire two mobile developers, plus at least one more guy of additional work in art assets, design, management overhead, etc.

Now on top of all that, the server itself isn't ready to listen to the app. The sessions in EVE are tied to your existence in game. Right now CCP Foxfour, as well as many third party developers are working hard to figure out the extent of what they can do with the CREST API. However, they have hit a wall where things that require an active session actually activates the character. If the person was undocked, their ship would actually appear in space. This would be bad.

That problem, as well as any additional problems would have to be stomped out in order to get the app up and running. And that is all assuming you add some extra things like PI management just to make the damn thing worth doing at all.

So would it be cool? Absolutely! Are they working on it? Well they had a big push towards mobile years ago, but the main guy for that is no longer with the company. At least visibly the focus is on working with the API, rather than developing an official companion app, but you never know.

Would you be willing to pay, say, $30 + $10/month for such an app?

As Ashterothi said, it's a bunch of work for CCP. Willing to pay for it? If not, they probably aren't willing to put in the work. If yes, glorious!

Reserving one percent of the skill extractor income should cover the cost P

Although I assume you may be being tongue in cheek, I prefer to let numbers do the talking ;-)

The best data we have is from CCP Quant who reported that by 21:00

Quote:
Approximately 30,000,000,000 SP extracted @ 21:00 eve time, 5,000,000,000 SP sunk, and 16,000,000,000 SP applied #eveonline #tweetfleet

30 billion SP is ~ 6k extractors (according to folks on the same Twitter post thread).

At 6 bucks a pop that makes them ~ $360,000

One percent of that is about $3,600

Now, I am going to assume that this is the biggest day of skill trading, and probably will be for a long time.

I get it seems like a lot of money, 3k a day isn't nothing, but like I said it is going to go down, and isn't enough to fund a new development effort by itself.

Well, that'll buy a decent amount of hamster food - oh and pizza.

Actually phone apps are typically micro-transacted, so $0.99 for every change (market orders, skills, whatever) that you submit through the app.

I played a bad MMO called Neverwinter for a while. This game had a feature where you could do your professions/crafting through a browser out-of-game, a useful thing for people who are at school/work and need to set their profession tasks (many of which take hours/days to complete). After a couple of years they had to turn this feature off because of the amount of botters taking advantage of it. Later they brought the feature back, but heavily changed the professions to make them less rewarding for everyone, botters and legit players alike.

Because of this experience, I believe that if you give EVE players the ability to play the market out-of-game like that, it will be filled with bots within days. Also, let us not forget that the more people who can play EVE without actually logging-in, the less players you have around to shoot or talk with. This would also bring login figures way down.

I marvel at people who can constantly walk around with a gadget in their hand. What do you do with your free hand?

HOLD A PAPER CUP OF LATTE??

Confirming that, at the slightest HINT of this being implemented, I'd be selling off all my production-related SP. Can't compete with bots (which is one of many reasons I do not mine)
