Ship Mastery Question

Can anyone explain to me why the Mastery of a Stiletto requires Armor Layering? The definition of armor layering is: Skill at installing upgraded armor plates efficiently and securely, reducing the impact they have on agility and speed. Grants a 5% reduction to armor plate mass penalty per level.

While I know I can put armor plates on a Stiletto, why would I?

Please be nice...

Maybe someone more combat-hardened can answer properly, but I imagine if you're facing down enemies with high EM damage, it would be easier to tank with your armor. The stiletto has a balance of shields and armor, so it can do either one.

I've been flying them for years and speed/shield tank works best.

Slowing down an interceptor just doesn't make sense to me.

It's part of the Armor Tanking mastery and thus shows up on the Stiletto as well. BigRain mentioned that they can be armor tanked, so there you have it. If its actually feasible to do that may or may not be situation dependent.

Masteries are more guidelines anyway and if you ask me, they can be pretty much ignored, just like the old certificate system (apart from Elite Hull Tanking, of course).

When you don't know the difference between there, their, and they're, you come across as being so uneducated that your viewpoint can be safely dismissed. The literate is unlikely to learn much from the illiterate.

While I can't answer your specific question, I can say that in general the Mastery system is ****** and you should be ignoring it. Use corpmates or the appropriate sub-forum when you want to know about proper fitting of a ship you haven't used before.

There are several such "mastery" goofs; expecting a skill that would never be used. It's a shame, too, since it provokes Mr. Epeen's sort of response to it as a system. There are also more than a few such systems that have this half-a$$ed approach toward excellence in craftsmanship. Unfortunately, it makes certain folks look like they have attention spans that dart around like mosquitoes, never staying long to finish anything and always jumping onto the next shiny thing.

Accrual of this sort of attention over time will result in an across the board questionable quality that would be well nigh impossible to ferret out and correct. Such is why this sort of approach to dealing with multi-layered constructs is frowned upon by those who know. Evidence of this approach is in celebrating accomplishments which are in truth merely cosmetic in nature.

As long as the tale of the hunt is told by the hunter, and not the lion, it will favor the hunter.

Agreed, just thought there was something I missed.

The idea of a suggested skill progression system is a fine one for newbies in my opinion, but it should have stopped at a level of 'reasonable competence'.

You aren't going to convince an expert at chess that he should improve his 'queen's bishop pawn mastery' with a pop-up box.

I think it's a nice addition for new players to get a sense for skills that may affect stats of a ship. It's not that easy to grasp which of the over 400 skills are worth looking at.
