hey guys sorry in advance for the long post

ok so i've played this game for a while on and off for a few years i've made alts deleted alts made some more tried all the factions before i settled on the one i liked and to be honest the lowest sec rating i've ever gone to is 0.6. i know the basics of the game pretty well (i think) i feel i'm ready to get out there and stop playing this game like it's single player.

so i guess my question is HOW do i get out there i'd love to just join some pvp oriented corp and maybe see what this game is actually all about but what's a good starting point.

-what skills should i get before i try to join a corp

-whats an API key

-i live in eastern time but work nightshift is there much pvp going on during nighttime hours

-what exactly does things like a "tax rate" mean to me as a player

so ya sorry if i seem like a bit of a noob i've done a bit of my own research on these things myself i just wanna make sure i'm not doing anything wrong haha...i've read some of the cool stories about massive alliance vs alliance fights and it just keeps reminding me about how wrong i've been playing this game so any advise or help would be appreciated thanks in advance

PS: if there's anything any of you guys think i missed or should be prepared for before i take the plunge please feel free to add them

What skills before joining:

Finding a good corp is difficult; you're dealing with players so there's no "formula" to follow, and also if they need any ships to be flown, their existing members can just train the skills (as there are no restrictions), so typically corps don't recruit based on needed roles or ships, but rather based on trust and personality compatibility. So my recommendation would be to either join FW (faction warfare) in lowsec (to get some PVP experience), or Red vs. Blue (they're basically at war, for fun), or head out to a place like the Providence region that doesn't shoot neutrals on sight, and see if you can make friends.

API key:
The API system is a way for websites and software programs outside EVE to read (only) in-game information. Corps ask for it because they want to see whether your alts are in enemy corporations, and so they can interface their forums to automatically give you access based on your position in the corp. Instead of creating a forum password, the forum just checks the API and if you're still a member of the corp, great, access granted.

Night-time PVP:
EVE is international, everyone plays on the same "server"; the population is lower at night (US) but there's still an Australian contingent of players. Just look for a corp that's active when you play.

Tax rate:
PVE is typically a money-making activity so you can buy ships to blow up in PVP. PVP usually (not always) isn't profitable, but is a lot of fun. Some PVE activities are taxed (mission rewards, planetary industry shipping), with player corps being able to set such taxes. Typically a player corp will want some sort of tax income so they can provide free ships to newbies, or ship replacements to its PVP members. It'll depend on how the corp is organized.

As far as advice: high sec is crowded and there isn't much that you can do better as a group than solo; high sec corps tend to fail because their members realize "hey I'm better off solo rather than paying all these taxes and dues." You need a corp that lives in "dangerous" space, lowsec, null, or wormholes, because first they have access to stuff that requires groups, and second the "danger" forces the members to be buddies, rely on each other, and stay together. Well, more than high-sec anyway.

You were ready on day 2 of your Eve time and probably day 1. You just need a little time to explore the basics of the UI on your own, after that you are ready to get with other players and have vets that you can ask questions of.

you need no skills to join a corp. This game has little to do with your character's skills and everything to do with you.

Yes there is PvP in all time zones. Some are more active than others but there is always PvP in this game.

You can't do anything wrong in this game if you are having fun that is all that is required.

You've already been given some good advice by the posters above me.

If you are able to play before you work the night shift, you'll be able to catch the late EU guys and some of the early US guys. Depending on when you get home, you'll either be seeing the AUTZ guys or the early EUTZ guys. Either way, you'll find people to play with. Find a group that is active when you play and that's all you need. One of the easiest ways to do that is to click "Show Info" on people you see when you're playing and see what corporations they belong to. If you start seeing some of the same corporations often, maybe you should look into applying there!

If you want to get started with PvP, Faction Warfare in low-sec is pretty hot right now. A lot of it is done in cheaper T1 ships and many corporations that help newbros will offer these ships for free. You just need to find them!

Remember that ships are just ammo in this game and losing them is something to shrug off. Have fun out there and feel free to ask more questions!

To add what the others have said.

Nightcrawler's Corp guide https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=331341&find=unread

Api's are mainly for weeding out spies, which are very much a thing in eve. It doesn't work, but it at least weeds out the spies that aren't willing to pay for another account.

Joining corps is based more on attitude that sp. Those SP minimums are usually just for weeding out spies, although some are elite corps, they are relatively rare. If you are enthusiastic enough, some corps have training corps so if you apply anyway they might just send you to a different corp.

The main thing you need to join a corp isn't skill points, it is the willingness to have your ships blown up, often. ask about reimbursement plans. Many corps have them, and it help a lot when it comes to flying bigger ships. Don't be surprised if one of the first things the corp does is hand you a skill plan. All corps and alliances have a ship doctrine, so one of the first thing you will be doing on joining a corp, other than moving yourself where the corp is, is training up to fly the ships the corp wants you to fly.

Stop deleting your alts, if you trained them anyway. Training time is never wasted. Now you can extract a character's SP and sell it.

Since you don't know what API is, before Memphis explained it. Get Eve Mon. Critical tool every player, practically, uses to plan and track their skills. It will require you to make an API.

When you join a corp they will ask for an api key. Make a separate one from the one you use for eve mon. http://evemon.battleclinic.com/ This is the best 3rd party app in eve.

Rookie Corps:

Pandemic Horde and Karma Fleet are the big two rookie corps after the downfall of Brave Newbies Inc. from the largest corp in EVE (BNI are still around having fun in lowsec faction warfare).

Others corps come immediately to mind (not really rookie corps, but tend to welcome them):

* TEST alliance corps (like Dreddit) have evolved the meme that "TEST is recruiting."
* Signal Cartel seems perfect for peaceful explorers.
* Wingspan Delivery Service for those not so peaceful explorers.
* Dirt 'n Glitter is an active lowsec faction warfare corp.
* ...

I could go on and on. There are just so many. Check the recruiting forum.

EDIT: I almost forgot to mention that EVE University has campuses in every security of space.

Dreddit within Test Alliance is always looking for newbros willing to learn the game. They have a big reddit base and full of neckbeards willing to mentor. Check them out!

None. Don't fall into the trap of "just one more skill and I'll do X", because you'll forever be "just training one more skill" and never get anywhere. Just go for it now while you have the impetus.

Kedrin Kast wrote:

-whats an API key

It allows other players to see what characters you have on your account, how much ISK you have, what skills you have trained, etc. This is important info to weed out potential spies, and to help put you into a role that will be most beneficial to you and the corp. You'll be given instructions on how to create an API key by any good recruitment officer.

This is a game played by people all over the world, on a single server, there is always action to be had. You'll want to find a corp that has members online when you are.

Kedrin Kast wrote:

It means reduced personal income for ratting and mission running for the most part. I wouldn't join a corp that takes the pee with their tax rate, unless they have a ship reimbursement program or some other way of compensating you for the loss of income.

Oh, and I'll add one more thing about corp tax. It doesn't affect trades.

My CEOs were actually a bit miffed at me because I'm a trader by profession, so they didn't get a share of my profits.
