What is the Purpose of Society ? What Function does it Serve ?

Consider the Scriptures:

"In the beginning all things were as one.
God parted them and breathed life into his creation
Divided the parts and gave each its place
And unto each, bestowed purpose"
- The Scriptures, Book I 1:4

It Follows, that each Person has a Purpose, although this Purpose is not Necessarily Obvious. Example would be a Saint, who would Only discover their Purpose when the appropriate Criteria had been Reached.

Consider the Words of the Apocryphon:

"My word lies within all,
All it requires is the breath of faith,
To ignite the fire,
So the lost can find their way,
So the fallen can rise,
To take their place as my chosen,
For you are all my creation,
And are all equal in my kingdom."

It Follows, that All Persons, regardless of Origin, may become Chosen, when given the correct Opportunity to commit Acts of Righteousness.

Therefore:

The Ideal society is One that allows All Persons, regardless of their Origin, the Opportunity to Act Righteously, and become Chosen.

Therefore:

Investment in Education and Equality of Opportunity should be the Priorities of Governmental Policy. The Child of a Slave should have the Same Opportunity to study the Scriptures and achieve Righteousness through making Theophilosophical Insights, as the Child of a Holder, for whom Such Opportunities are Normal.

Conclusion:

The Function of Society is to Create Opportunities for People to Achieve Righteousness.


Such is my Answer to the Question. What other Answers could there Be ?

Society is an emergent property of mass human interactions. Its the sum total of the ethical, cultural, philosophical, and religious beliefs of the people that comprise that society.

A society cannot be one person, its something further up the complexity tree, it arises when a bunch of people have to work together. In the ancestral environment, those groups more able to work together were rewarded with a greater chance of survival and thus greater degree of evolutionary fitness.

Over time this effect compounded as larger and larger groups of humans began to interact and form things like cities and agriculture. These complex undertakings forced the creation of social and cultural systems to funnel people into tasks the group considered valuable.

Society then, could be best described of as a mutually held framework of interactions among a population. Languages, customs, beliefs, religions, social hierarchies and institutional structures, these are the subcomponents of a society. Being a part of society means, to use an analogy, knowing the rules to the game of life that everyone is currently agreeing to play by, and by being an active participant in that game.

All that being said then, what is the function of a society? Well, going off the train of thought I established above, it would seem as if the function of a society is whatever the collective of that society assigns as the function. In this way, Synthia, your answer isn't wrong for your society, though I believe there's much more to your society then that. A society is a very complex system, it can be doing more then one thing at once.

But that's all contingent on a very simplistic model of human interactions where you have rational actors who are cooperating with each other out of voluntary self interest. Human interaction is a lot more complex then that though, and society doesn't have to conform to the expectations of everyone, merely those who have the power. With enough power, you can completely rewrite the rules to the game. This can and does happen.

Societies aren't static, they are dynamic, active, and capricious. A society is not a person, doesn't have its own morals, and can't change its mind since it doesn't have one. Its hard to change things, to make society into something you want it to be, even with a tremendous amount of power. As Queen of whatever planet you're running Synthia, you could probably make meaningful change, but you're also shaped by society as society is shaped by you. Your goals for society strongly resemble many of the prevailing opinions of the existing societies you were shaped by. The society of a hundred years before you, will probably strongly that of a hundred years after your passing, once you've adjusted for technology changes and widescale trends.

Society happens when a group of people come together for the sake of mutual defense, safety and shared causes in exchange of certain rights, privileges and freedoms.

Exactly what rights, privileges and freedoms had to be sacrificed is usually discussed and agreed to before the society is materialised. Additional sacrifices will be discussed some time in the future depending on whatever it was that is threatening the society (erosion of culture and societal standards, natural disasters, hungry animals, hostile societies, cosmic horrors from beyond space and time...)

A Minmatar warship is like a rusting Beetle with 500 horsepower Cardillac engines in the rear, armour plating bolted to chassis and a M2 Browning stuck on top.

The chief aim of man is to glorify God.

A Society enables man to glorify God on a larger scale than a single individual can glorify God alone.

For example, I could not glorify God in slave sacrifices on the million-slave scale without the infrastructure of stations, freighters, hangers, security personnel, knife manufacturers and so on. I accomplish these great deeds even without the willing assistance of the rest of society; imagine how society could glorify God if all society were working together on the goal of slave sacrifices. Such it was in the last Blood Age, and such it will be in the Blood Age to come. May it come quickly. Amen. Amarr Victor.

Like we see in the evolution of biological organisms, the growth of a civilization gravitates towards greater and greater levels of integral complexity in order to survive harsher/more variable environments. This is in order to survive and propagate itself, along with the culture of the population it carries. In short, society is a survival tool by which humans utilize to continue the existence of the species.
