Solo PVP Ships now

Hello,

I've been away from the game for a good while (5 years?). I've mainly been doing missions and some lo-sec PVP in canes prior to my break. First thing I noticed when I came back was that my cane fits are no longer valid (used to have two neuts) and it seems slower than before. Needless to say, I blew up a few canes trying to figure out how to PVP again. So frustrated, I turned to google for a new hurricane fit, and what I found was rather disappointing. So here are my questions:

  1. Is it not good to solo PVP in canes (or BCs in general) anymore?
  2. People seem to PVP in cruisers more often nowadays, how do you handle gate guns with cruiser hulls?
  3. It seems projectiles (or minmatar ships) have been heavily nerfed. This is not a problem for my main (which can fly most subcaps well) but I have a minmatar alt that is very specialized in flying the cane (arties/ac specialization V's, min BC V, armor skills at V etc, subpar drone skills). Should I start training drones/blasters/energy turrets and forfeit all that effort I put in projectiles/minmatar ships? Or should I stick with minmatar and maybe fly a stabber or something along those lines?
  4. Given the current meta, what skills should I highly consider investing in?

It seems that Gallente are in a good place now but I just cant get myself to fly the retro style ships... but maybe I will give it a try in the future!

That site has data. The post is asking for information and analysis.

1. BCs are alright for solo'ing, they got a slight buff recently (projection among other), they fare quite well against part of the current meta, but they're still very vulnerable while travelling, moreso with insta locking camps and 30k+ infiniscram HICs. Cane is in a better place now than 2 years ago.

2. I'm pretty sure most cruisers you see on killmails (both sides) in lowsec don't take gate guns. Factional Warfare has driven a lot of players to lowsec, and with an "arena-style" pvp (FW complexes) and "red vs blue" type ROEs, you get lots of fights without going criminal. Also, note that today, just warping out to a perch and warping right back in supresses the sentry aggression.

3. As for projectiles, artillery is still awesome, moreso with the long range gun buff. However, medium autocannons are in a bad place, they can't project like yesterday, and their advantages (no cap, decent tracking, damage choice) are not enough to make them good. The hull bonuses on traditional med AC platforms are a bit underwhelming. The rest is alright.
My advice would be: train missiles. It will be useful for minmatar missile platforms as well as for an eventual cross-training.

4. Missiles. Optimize your drone skills. Look up tactical destroyers, electronic attack ships, command destroyers, logistics, interdictors. Minmatar is still a decent choice as of today.

Thank you. This is very informative, especially the thing about plexes. Never participated in FW so had no idea this was a thing. Also, good to know that its still good to fly minmatar. One question though, can I participate in fights even if I don't join FW?

Slow BCs kinda puts me off, you can't really bail out when you need to, not sure why I was PVPing in BCs in the first place. I will start PVPing with destroyers to get my pvp skills up to snuff and maybe try out the new t3 stuff. Do you have any cheap but good thrasher arty fits that would be good to bring to low sec FW?

Thank you for your advice.

You should just go with a nice cheap tristan or incursus OP. Lose a ton and you will learn a ton in the process.
