If I wait for something to be on sale I think that'll come in under $800.
What do you think?

I use www.tomshardware.com which has gaming rigs at various price points with benchmarks. I use the guides to pick and choose components.

$600: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/core-i5-overclock-performance-gaming,3097.html
$1200: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/fx-overclock-crossfire-ssd,3098.html
$2400: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/overclock-core-i7-sli-liquid-cooling,3096.html
Comparison, price & performance, stock vs overclocked, etc.: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/core-i5-fx-6100-overclock-benchmark,3099.html

It only gets confusing when they switch between Intel and AMD cpus.

I did feel like I was spending too much on the card.
I like the 6870 1gb for under 200.

Pretty solid. Very similar to the build I just did. I would swap out the memory you picked for this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231461

$10 more, same speed, same latency, but only 1.25V per stick vs. 1.5v.

Also, where's your PSU? (Re-use?)

If you could wait a few more months you can get Ivy Bridge and a 7x series ATI GPU (or whatever the next tier for Nvidia is).

Edit: Also, the 2500k is awesome to OC. I did just the "turbo" clock to 4.6Ghz so that it OCs when I game and idles right back down when I'm done. I left all the other settings as is (contrary to what a lot of OC guides tell you to do), just tweak the turbo clock.

Almost the same stuff I upgraded with (X fire 6870's though.) No complaints. One thing to double check make sure you have enough actual 6 pin rails for the card/s. None of that molex adapter crap... doesn't work. With that case might want to upgrade fans, and double check airflow.

If you do go with a 6870 I highly recommend the MSI twin frozor or hawk. Very quiet fans and excellent cooling. (Double check space in said case as the cards are on the larger side.

Also one thing i encountered when I upgraded with that MB and CPU my older zalmans brackets were a tad off from my 775 socket so I had to get new ones.

-:slowly let's go of ccp forum neck for eating post:-

synopsis: the sonata case with integrated power supply looks like it'll let you cook on top of it with the lack of airflow through it.

look harder for a case to hang it all in, and a ps to make it go.

I hate PC cases and PSU's. I tend to take the easy way out because when I spend the money on a 'good' one that comes recommended I always hate it anyway, and when I buy a cheap one my PSU and/or mobo never fits in it properly (which is why I started out with a combo).

I think what I'm going to do is get one of those workbench setups where everything is open and horizontal. Have to look at prices though.
