Faction warfare-any reason to fly anything other than a frigate?

So I have almost maxed out my skills for gallente t1 frigs and kind of brainstorming where to go from here. I want to stay in FW and I can't really see any reason why I should jump up to a cruiser. I had been thinknig about a VNI but honestly I have amassed a small fortune just flying Tristans.

As far as I can tell jumping up to a cruiser, you gain alot more tank and firepower but you lose alot in the way of tracking and hitting smaller targets. Not to mention the jump in costs of a cruiser vs a frigate.

So I guess I am wondering given what I just said, if anyone can convince me why I should go with a cruiser in FW vs a frigate.

Ah, I remember this question when I was in FW, I chose to start with Cruisers, then I went to Assault Frigates, and now that I am a pirate, I fly a Megathron class Battleship :) fly whatever you like, fly what makes you enjoy the game, of course, it will take you a metric ton of time to be able to pilot a Battleship optimally (I can't), so you won't loose them everytime.

Good luck with your PvP Career! :D Hit us up at Spectre if you ever want to have some fun with a bigger fleet!

always depends on what to you want to do , achieve

if you want lp/money stay in frigs, if you want to do more things just fly whatever you want whenever you want.

CCP it's time to remove Off Grid Boost and Put Them on Killmail too, add Logi on killmails .... Open that damn door !!

you shall all bow and pray BoB

Because you can join in a wider variety of engagements and have more fun?

I don't know about whatever group you fly with but in MCF1B we rage form anything up to battleships on the fly, that versatility gets us more fun/hour. The enemy militia is nearby in force bashing an I-hub? You could be 'that guy' trying to be a pain in a Garmur, or if you have three friends online you can jump into 4 caracals and cause some damage to the enemy fleet. I guarantee it would be more effective than 4 Tristans. Likewise try showing up to a POS op in a Tristan, more or less pointless.

If you are just looking to farm LP then there is no real reason to move past frigate. If you are looking to maximise your options for engaging in whatever PVP opportunities arise then versatility is the key.

I think one thing to remember is Frigate fights are really brutal and normally decided by one mistake! the high damage ones can have about 40-65% the damage of a cruiser, with about 15% of the EHP.

Example: slide into plex on comet, web him and pull range, oh **** he is rail scram kite not blasters, that fight just got very hard already.

The tank on cruisers sometimes allows you to recover from a small mistake, example a RLML Caracal VS Caracal it would normally take a full reload of the weapon system to down a an enemy one. or you might get blobbed but have time to call in your own backup, frigates that get blobbed and tackled get erased.

My favorite fight is probably cruisers, but it is pretty hard to get a 1v1 in them. and medium plexes can allways have a recon in them :)

PS - i pulled them numbers out my **** but i think that is about right
when saying cruiser DPS is about 550 in a balanced setup and up around 800 in gank, and comet can have over 300 in a gank setup.

I fly Algos as well but generally speaking don't go for cruisers or above since I mainly fly solo and you're likely to get blobbed in a cruiser.

u should get at least some cruiser training if you fly with fleets. if you dont then dont worry about it. your militia loves flying cruiser fleets so you could be very useful to them. i trained up for a cerberus just in case my miltia needs me in fleet with one but i am primarily training frigs.
i would just look at ships that look like fun that use the same guns for what skills you have trained. maybe even go for a pirate frig or something to add a little bit more excitement in your fights. t3 dessies are also really strong right now.

There is no reason :)

Now just pick another racial Frigate to train to V or start working on Dessies and become a perfect small ship PVP pilot.

You've already got the small guns and/or light drone skills trained...

Hecate is about same price as vexor navy issue and you do not need to skill medium guns.

Medium guns on a VNI. MEDIUM GUNS ON A VNI. (*Head explodes)

In all seriousness jumping up into a cruiser especially a VNI in faction warfare is great. The main issue you will have is getting fights as a VNI can wipe the floor with T3Ds/Frig gangs and is about as engageable as a shark with a buzzsaw strapped to its head.

Look through my losses for good VNI fits i pretty much only fly droneboats.

What you fly depends entirely on you and your Corp And not just being in faction warfare. I almost never fly frigs unless it's a role specific thing or I'm intentionally plexing.

Vni t3d and all sorts of ships are fun to fly. Do what you want and train accordingly. You don't lose skill points so you can't really waste training time.

;) Calm down. I did not say "Medium guns on a VNI". I was talking about T3D vs cruisers. VNI was mentioned just for the sake of the price. Cruisers do tend to use medium guns. Unless you fly Ultimate maller, which uses large beams...

Why fly bigger than frigs?

I do it because it's awesome fun to derp a cruiser into a small kitchen sink frig fleet and come out alive to start looting.

Same principle applies for BCs as well.

You can use HACs as well and it's a riot to wreck sol mixed fleets or fight up and go for BC and BS kills.

You engagement envelope increases significantly once you get past frigs.

Navy Comets are good. VNI's are just great to fly. Put some gecko's in them with an armour tank and fight a gang of 6-7 frogs in a medium and you will probably still survive. Lots of fun

Wow. I typed in frigs for my last post and my iPad spell checker changed it to frogs. Even the Apple iPad hates the galls. Who knew????

So you can massacre and bait frigate gangd to slaughter them like the filthy pigs they are. There are plenty of reasons to ship up. Frigates are just used because they are easier to roam in and cheaper. Plus provide more plexes you can enter. You could always fly a smartbombing proteus ;) ;)
