I'm one of many who invested in skins upon their initial release and on day 1 had a sizable stockpile after collecting many of the ships that were converted into skins.

Skin investment caught many off guard because they failed to take into account the fact that individuals purchasing skins for personal use would never need to buy more than one skin per account. This puts a huge damper on buying activity.

The requirements for my personal investment went as follows and are all based on the assumption that Eve will survive as a virtual reality and will continue to thrive with a solid paying community for years if not decades.

First off any skins NOT being sold for Aurum were priority. These were mostly limited edition ships such as many of the Catalysts that came into Eve through out of game packages. These will not be released again and very few of them are still entering game.

Next were the Quafe version of skins that were released initially and then promptly removed from the store.

And finally after attaching a real world $ value to the price of Aurum that is similar to the formula that 1x plex =$17.50=Current price of plex in ISK(accounting for sales and bulk purchases of plex) I then went about looking for the ships that had the lowest isk equivalency to their dollar purchase price. Some of these turned out to be the Merlin Nugoeihuvi & incursus Aliastra editions.

The idea is that eventually consumers would get a feel for the "real" value of these skins and realize that dollor per isk it was much cheaper to just purchase a plex and buy these skins in game than to buy Aurum and get the skin directly from the store and eventually isk prices on skins would begin to rise.

I also calculated that even if up to 50% of all people buying skins from the store always bought out of ignorance that these purchases would still be highly profitable in time and that most of not all skins would eventually find their true isk value in the same way that PLEX has.

From the beginning this was a long term investment for me which may take a couple more years to come to fruition however I believe that A majority of these particular skins will eventually see a minimum of 1000% price rise and some will go well beyond that as they slowly disappear from the market.

eh, my first Robotics one worked pretty well (back when I wanted to manipulate the price downward) and it didn't have a TL:DR.

It's called 'talking'. Hard to do for obvious reasons as we don't want to miss out on profits by informing others.
A perfect example of this is the private email chat you and I recently had as well the thread of yours that was closed earlier in the year.
Some things we keep on the downlow to maximize our profits and other things the risk to our profits may be negligible.
This is one of those cases.

Believe it or not I was merely sharing information in the hopes of stimulating conversation with like minded pilots.
If you can't find an angle it's because there isn't one.Cool

When I bought loads of skins I thought that droves of people would buy them because you never have to buy them again. I was desperately wrong - however, what you state here is only part of the "dampener". The other part, which may be more important, is that once a skin is bought and applied, it is *unsellable*. I now believe that the idea of buying something *unsellable* is a huge turnoff for many average EVE players, who don't have lots of ISK but are used to trying out a lot of different ships during a year.

Thankfully there was lots of speculator movement on the skins and I managed to make good money on the big swings despite my complete misread of the situation.

I long ago got rid of all the skins I originally had. Presently sitting on piles of skins is bad bad business, since the turnover of most of the pre-patch ones have tumbled from 10-20 per day to less than 1 per day, while the price is still just 100 mil or below. There are loads of items in New Eden more worthwhile.
