One of the more painful aspects of PI is switching a planet to a new output. I would propose the addition of:

Medium Basic/Advanced Processor - Equivalent to 3 current processors. 3x base fitting/cost, +100 PG, +150 CPU, +100k ISK
Large Basic/Advanced Processor - Equivalent to 5 current processors, 5x base fitting/cost, +200 PG, +300 CPU, +200k ISK
(Current processors rename to Small)

Advantages:

  • LESS CLICKING!
  • No new mechanics. New objects strictly use existing code.
  • Retains a small bonus to micromanagement.

Disadvantages:

  • Penalty is cheaper than route costs on large planets.
  • May be convenient enough to affect the market.

Or, we could go a totally different route and not keep 90% of the interface.
Like maybe making it a 'claim a district and fit it like it was a ship with PI fittings' interface. That you can save even.

A thoroughly redesigned PI interface would be nice, and with citadels being built along the same lines seems more likely than before. However, new PI structures using existing mechanics could be added with negligible dev time.
