Secure Cargo Containers vs Mobile Deposits

I am a new player who is exploring and is thinking about continuing that career. I am looking for a place to keep the loot from one find safe while scanning or hacking the next. It seems secure containers and mobile depost provide that function. I understand that the mobile depost unit allows for refitting while the container has more space. My research has left a lot of questions.

What are the other advantages of each?

Are anchored secure containers really invulnerable to anyone who doesn't have the password? This seems rather foolproof for EVE...

Do people stake them out for the owner to return?

Do people try and brute force secure containers?

I am not sure on the numbers, as I haven't done much with either one, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Basically, both can be shot at, so there's no invulnerability here. If someone shoots a Depot in Highsec, he will get a suspect flag, so anyone can shoot at him without Concord intervention. If someone shoots at a Secure Container in HS, he will get a criminal flag (Concordokken).

The Mobile Depot enters a reinforcement cycle after being shot down to 25% shields (I believe 48 hours). That means, you have time to come and either defend or evacuate it, before the attacker can finish it off. If the Container is being shot at, it goes pop.

A Mobile Depot can be accessed by only yourself, while a Secure Container can be accessed by anyone who has the password (your alts, friends, spies, ...)

Not sure if the following still applies: Back in the day, I used to fly around in a Mammoth scooping up Secure Containers whole, without any repercussions, because people either forgot or didn't know how to anchor them. Don't make that mistake.

As for the question of whether people will use them to mess with you: It happens, but neither probing down and camping Depots, nor trying to bruteforce Secure Containers are very popular activities. People who are flying around with a prober anyway may bookmark your depot or reinforce it right away, at least in Highsec. In Low- or Nullsec, a Depot may attract other pilots. It's probably a good idea in that case to make a second safespot nearby and do a 5% directional scan towards your Depot, before actually warping to it. That way you can see if someone's waiting there for you. That won't protect you from either cloakers or smart people, who don't wait at your depot directly but in a safespot, ready to pounce once they get you on their scanner, though. But as I said - it's not an overly popular passtime anyway.

Secure containers can not be scanned down by combat scan probes. Anchor them at a safe spot >14.3 Au from anything and they will remain safe. If it can't be scanned, or found on D scan, nobody will visit. You will need to open once every 30 days or else they will expire.

Mobile deposits can be scanned down by other players - so they are not completely safe, though if you keep it > 14.3 Au from anything you won't alert others to its existence. I've never had deposits in null destroyed, but you could be unlucky. I doubt anyone could handle the tedium of staking out a depo to catch the owner.

Best bet - find a large system, place a secure can in one safe spot, your mobile in the other. Keep you valuables in the can, and spare bits for the ship in the depo.

Having a secure can has saved me loosing billions in exploration ship losses on another alt.
