In preparation for the truly massive Citadels coming in Spring 2016 with the EVE: Citadel expansion we need more space in space! As such we saw a change in this fundamental, yet often forgotten, game world mechanic with the December release. The size of the grid has been changed from the standard 250 km to 8000 km.

Please note that in some cases,off-grid bookmarks might become visible on grid.

Further information and details are available in the latest dev blog Grid Sizes & You by Team Game of Drones.

Some Q&A...

Actually how big is the grid?
Grids are composed of multiple boxes, each box being 7864320m x 7864320m x 7864320m. In some cases you can have viewing distances above 20,000km.

Does this affect fleet warp?
Yes, anyone inside these larger grids will be affected by fleet warp.

Does this affect drag bubbles?
Yes you can now drag bubble people further away within the larger grids.

You do realise that the grid size in this devblog ( 8000km ) differs from what you announced in the patchnotes for tomorrows update? ( 7800km ), so which is it?

Affirmative.

Love this change! It's actually going to make space feel bigger AND smaller all at the same time! Awesomeness!

7,864,320 m but actually it depends because the grid is composed of multiple boxes of this size

Nothing is sacred anymore.

Also is this affecting how bubbles work (drag mechanics)?

So... does this mean we can now place stop & drag bubbles further away and have them still be effective?...Roll

Yes the larger grids mean you can drag bubble people further, but it will be more difficult to line it up properly at that distance.

Time to look at lock and weapon's ranges again.

Maybe move engagement ranges of Medium weapons out a bit, Large weapons out a lot, and X-Large weapons out a whole lot more.

Also maybe adjust min warp range and on-grid probing mechanics.

Among other things....

Great change.
Like others may have pointed out, increasing max warp distances should be a great idea for future enhancements.
Now that Brain in a box is in place too, are there any plans on increasing the max 250km lock range?
There's plenty of ships which can fire their weapons past 250km!

They are still instant undock... just not offgrid. Get in the dramiel/ceptor and follow along the line to get offgrid one.

so can we remove the warp deceleration speed cap now?

also, stealth nerf to off-grid gate camping. :P

I'm guessing this may change the nature of safespots as well? Typically making a safespot with say just a can could really only be found by warping around and hoping to drop a bookmark as you passed thru its grid. With Grid sizes larger I imagine this will make hunting down a safespot can a bit easier?

Will help make up for the changes to (or addition of?) warp acceleration / deceleration, that made it harder (especially when using frigates and cruisers.)

On the other side of the argument, Protect your "safe" spot cans, by not leaving them in a direct line between celestial objects.

Mobile jump drives get some use id assume now.

Oh, I perfectly understand, Hal Morsh — a mission like this requires courage, skill, and heroism… qualities you are clearly lacking. Have you forgotten you're one of the bloody immortals!?

The distance between rooms of missions separated by acceleration gates has increased slightly but hopefully not in any noticeable way.

Wow. I honestly did not expect this. There are tons of missions and sites with acceleration gates. I've found that the vast majority of rooms in these sites were apx 10000km away from the previous room. To adjust the distance between all these rooms must have been a very labor intensive task.

Also, yes plz adjust remove the 250km locking range cap.
