Hi all

So I have just started the game and have followed a few of the opportunity guidances. So i know how to move about, dock and mine asteroids. I have a few bits in my cargo hold from an encounter with a NPC, and also some Veldsapr from an asteroid.

I have no idea what I am actually doing though??? I seem to be randomly warping from place to place without a strategy. Also I can't seem to sell the stuff in my cargo hold. When I dock at Chaven VIII my Veldspar doesn't even show up in my cargo hold. The other looted bits I have transferred to a holding area on Chaven VIII but I can't seem to sell it.

Please help me get started on this game as I have desperately wanted to play this for years. Any advice or links would be appreciated

thanks

Hi and welcome. The new user experience is sadly kind of a mess but hopefully we can help.

There are proper tutorial missions that you can do that will give you tons of isk, free ships and equipment. To access them, hit your F12 key and select "Career Agents." Pick one (it doesn't matter which) to see where they are located and then right click on the agent's station. From the menu that pops up, select "Set Destination." If that isn't an option then that means you are already in the station with them. If you are able to set the destination, undock, and use your overview to navigate to the system and station where they are.

You'll be feeling a lot less adrift after this. Be sure to do all the tutorials. They're kind of old, but the information the give out is still good.

Welcome again!

The first day and getting used to the UI can be a little tricky. I tried to convo you in game to hopefully try and walk you through some it. It's a lot easier to show someone IRL in my personal opinion but we can do it through a text convo. However some back and forth would be a lot easier than just posting on the forum so hopefully you can make some friends rather quickly

I'll start here with a few tips. First you have 3 basic locations in station:
-Your item hangar
-Your ship hangar
-Your ship's cargohold

which ever one that you currently have open if you click on the triangle in the upper left corner it will open an interface with more options. From there you can access the rest. In eve if in doubt right click. So you can right click on your ship and select open cargohold. From pretty much anywhere you can select to open in another window or shift click to open in another window.

As far as the market goes this is a player driven market. That means that pretty much everything that is sold or purchased on the market is by other players. There are few very rare exceptions to this but as a rule you are buying from or selling to other players.

As a result learning how to be good at market trading is a whole game within a game. However it is not all that complicated to become basically proficient at using the market to buy and sell the things that you have or need.

For starters you can only see items for sale in your current region. You can buy anything that shows up on the market but it is only available at the location where it is bought or sold. So if you buy something at a station 3 jumps away you will need to go those 3 jumps to that station to pick it up.

Also for selling if you want to sell something to a buy order at another station you will need to go to that station and deliver it to the buyer. Now buyers can set up sell orders for a variety of distances up to and including region wide. So it is possible that someone has a buy order up at a remote station yet you can sell to them at your current station. Any buy orders that show up as green are available to you.

Once you open the market UI there is a search bar with a search button to the right of it. Once more to the right of the search button is a gear wheel that opens up an options or settings UI. As a new player they will likely have that locked down so that you don't get confused or buy something on the other side of the universe or something like that.

I recommend to everyone that one of the first things that one should do in game is to uncheck the box in the market settings that says "show only available". I also recommend that once that is done you use "window shopping" in the market as a way to get familiar with what is out there so to better plan your gameplay.

Beyond that you can set your range for further out than just the current station. Keep in mind however that you will need to be cautious as to where you buy and sell stuff from as it could be in low or null sec even depending on where you are located.

Beyond what I've posted here I'd need some questions from you to proceed further. So either you can let me know and I'll try and catch you in game or you can try joining "Help Chat - Reloaded" which is an ingame chat channel there to help new players but is made up of other players and not the offical help chat that is often overloaded and of marginal use.

There is a chat bubble icon on the left hand side of your screen that brings up the chat UI which you can search for that channel.

Also just browsing through those icon and exploring the UI of the game can be helpful.

Further I know that there are several videos out there that are targeted at day 1 players and walk you through the UI. Some of them are better than others but they are there for you to search and view.

Finally and most importantly Eve is an MMO. It is really meant to be played with others. Nearly all of us vets in game have a long list of players that helped us get up and going when we were brand new and are eager to pay the debt forward. So making friends and finding people that you can play with in game and have a two way convo is pretty important for most new players.

Everyone else seems to have the basics that I would have mentioned covered but I do have one caution for you.

NEVER go into low sec, nul sec or a worm hole in the only ship you own.
To put that another way ALWAYS make sure you have a ship in high sec somewhere that you can use to make ISK with.
If you follow these 2 basic pieces of advice then I and many others would encourage you to explore all areas of space and see which you like the best.

If you're in a venture it's in your ore hold.

If it's civilian stuff some of that can't be sold.

For what it is worth, an ESC menu option that I really think should be default:

Merge item hangar with station menu (or some wording similar to that).

When enabled, when you dock you'll see tabs under the corp banner on the right, where you can find your ships and items in the station, which you can right-click sell (first check the market price - there is a button on the price summary towards the bottom right that opens the market for the item you want to sell).

Beware that by default the market pane is NOT sorted sensibly (my opinion). Click on the price column headers repeatedly until
* Sell orders have the lowest price at the top.
* Buy orders have the highest price at the top.
By repeatedly clicking the price column header you will see that there are not just two sort orders for the price column, but rather more like 3 or 4, one of which is for example closest & lowest (I think the default for sell orders), rather than just lowest.

You probably should check the option (gear in market window) to show your orders, and to only show orders in hisec (0.5 to 1.0 security).

Otherwise station items can be found by opening your inventory (NOT assets = shows all stations, this icon looks like a vault) from the Neocom bar on the left, NOT from the cargo button on your ship.

Hi Sarab o/

Welcome to Eve! There are a number of resources available to new players that should help you find your feet in our universe. Here are a few links to resources that I think you'll find helpful:

There are tons of resources out there, including the official wiki and the Eve University wiki. I'd highly recommend finding a newbro-friendly corporation to join as well. There are some well established ones out there depending on your preferences.

Good luck out there! Let us know if you have more questions.

grrrr this game is infuriating lol

Ok I am now trying to activate an acceleration gate. I think I have the gas passkey in my hold as the Agent should have given it to me. However the acceleration gate is locked!!!

What do I do? Do I have to find another pass key?

Don't worry about it, eve is renowned for its steep learning curve (and the cliff dwelling savages trying to eat you as you climb it).

The only stupid question is the one you don't ask.

no problem, most of us were already crazy P

also alt+g and alt+n open your item and ship hangars respectively. Personally when in station I always have these open. and then I have the alt+c inventory open next to that with my ship's cargo bay open. makes it quick and easy to drag ammo over to reload, or drag cargo into the hangar, or my loot can. Also nice to keep track of mission specific items like passkeys. Having a cargo container you can just throw loot in makes keeping your hangar floor a bit neater. some people organize all their stuff in cans but I usually don't have enough stuff that is an issue and can keep my stuff loose. Plus with filters and the fitting tool it is usually just easier to do it that way imo.

Fellow X player here ... just imagine X's NPCs hordes replaced by actual players and also the market is almost completely player driven. So you compete with other players and groups in every aspect of the game, and this is the ultimate kick which keeps the game interesting beyond any scripted stuff. The mission and NPC standing system is quite similar.

I'm my own NPC alt.
