Thanks for the advice, everybody. I'm rethinking going for solo right away, and I think I'll look into joining a corp like Brave. I know this is something I could research myself, but about how long would it take to train an effective alt booster?

Tbh Brave aint a good place to learn solo simply because ull end up learning from the usual fleet f1 mentality. Try RvB, better for that

Ignore everyone telling you to train a booster, off-grid links are being removed very shortly.

Got a source for that?

highly doubt it, but one of the things they said they could do with brain in a box was a move to on grid boosting, and/or various other changes to boosting. and I've seen a whole bunch of ideas floated around for various other changes to boosting. As to what CCP is thinking, well you know what they say about magic crystal balls.

I don't know where people are hearing OGB is being removed,

I keep hearing about it though, this is like the 4th time in passing that I've heard it mentioned.

Maybe it's because of the grid changes or something.

But my sources have proven pretty good so far. *shrugs*

OGB is going. Straight from the horse's (Fozzie) mouth on a stream I believe. The link is on the forums somewhere and there's also a reddit threadnaught.

The Orthrus is blob bait. And an expensive lossmail if you hit an instalock camp. Not a good place to start solo PvP. Best used for harassing frigate/destroyer blobs of questionable competence. RLML are a must; it doesn't have fitting for anything else and you're going to be primarily killing fast tackle anyway. Ship benefits hideously well from links and once they're gone it will continue to benefit heavily from snake implants. Poor cap life, dead if tackled for more than a second - it's a highly mobile hit and run machine designed to murder overconfident or overly courageous tackle.

If you want to practice that play style start with condors and Caracals. Garmur and orthrus are just those two hulls on pharmaceutical grade cocaine.

last night one of my corpmates went and found the source

cheers smitty

http://www.twitch.tv/ccp/v/27816547 the whole stream can be ignored but in the last 5min fozzie states that links are likely going to become aoe,
combining that statement with them making grid size massive then yeah - off grid - boosting will be a thing of the past .

personally this wouldn't hurt me as mine are both neutral and stupidly obvious (not that iv ever hidden my use of them anyway)
so i shall still be boosting happily unless they make further changes to flagging and even then i can just bring them in house.

also worth mentioning that my booster alt is actually quite dangerous in its own right so i have plenty of uses for itBlink

With the increase in size of grids an on-grid booster is basically as good as being off grid. Yes with the right implants and skillsets you could possibly scan down the on-grid booster but some of the fits being test are close to impossible to lock even though they are on grid.
