No Alts, no bots, no players only log in to update skills and for w/e reason they login and log out in 2-3 minutes.

My guess is 11000 Twisted

So, one?

Here I used to have a sig of our old Camper in space. Now it is disregarded as being the wrong format. Looking out the window I see one thing: Nothing wrong with the format of our Camper! Silly CCP......

Being a little more serious, we know that 85% or so of the people that log in actually do something, at least undock and fly somewhere. Then there are probably a bunch of trade hub characters that never undock but still play the game.
So.... At least 90% of those who log in actually 'play'.

We also know that there are about 1.5 characters per player per a recent twitter or reddit 'guessing' contest.

The only question now comes is how many people actually log in per day, since all we have is concurrent logins rather than a discrete login total and we have no idea of the average length of play session. But the answer is a lot more than you think, that much is for sure.

We know from Fanfest that there were on average 420,000 unique players logging in each month throughout 2014 (175,000 unique per day too if my memory is correct), so somewhere around there is an upper limit.

If PCU is also a mirror of subscriptions, then the lower limit would be about 30% less then that, so somewhere around 300,000 on the lower end.

However it's probably not a direct relation between subscription loss and the drop in PCU, but there isn't really a good way to estimate what the difference is.

So it's likely 300,000 - 420,000 but where exactly in that range, it would be great if CCP released the figure again.

It's one of those things that received a lot of discussion a while back but our focus seems to have shifted away from it lately. I think Ripard's estimate going off the CSM voting information earlier this year and working back to his 2014 calculation, estimated around 320,000 subscriptions (not necessarily unique players), however there were some assumptions in that which also make the error margin fairly large from a conservative view.

I'm not sure we can seriously get a much better estimate then that with a high degree of confidence, without CCP giving us more up to date data.

Doesn't matter, active accounts matter.

Although the amount of players in-game does matter, as people attract people, so player retention is generally better.

Part of why failing MMOs tend to add a F2P element, so that it bolsters the amount of players and helps keep those paying players that are still left.

Why does it matter even?

As long as there is content around you, do such numbers matter? Do you feel better if there are 200k people online, instead of 20k?

Of course in a certain way numbers matter. CCP needs subscribed people so they can keep developing, making the game better, continuing it's path. You also want parts of space not to be empty.

How can YOU contribute? Try to recruit more people into the game, tell them how much you enjoy playing it. Get them hooked, that way you get more friends / targets to play with / shoot at.

You win, CCP wins.
