Don't be surprised that there are good folks in EvE who actually help folks out.
There are more of them than the lore and stories lead most people to believe.

With that said, Daerrol spoke some good words of wisdom.. heed them and you'll be fine.

You just gave me an idea. One could make stand up comic a career path!

Flast, welcome to Eve! We're glad you're here. Big smile

As a new player, it's important to join with a group if you want to play this game. Going solo isn't recommended. Why exactly do you not like Eve-Uni? It's a great place to learn the game and meet some great people. Don't knock it til you try it!

I was not indicating dislike, It's that the Uni is ubiquitous and I do know about it Smile Though I teach in RL so may not be able to resist giving them a lesson ob. WWW, EBI (TEEP). I'd certainly have to check their marking... Assessment for learning very important. So I'm told anyway... lol

Nice folk in EvE do exist, so long as you have a positive attitude, everything is for ***** and giggles. But if your butthole clenches.. Well said ''nice'' folk will give you one hell of a time.

Can't blame you though, people usually read about eve BEFORE playing so they come in expecting a ponzi scheme, always expecting someone to backstab you later if they even look remotely ''nice''.

I do hate that eve brings out the worse part of me, always being wary of people gets tiring fast....

Don't shoot those annoying jet cans/wrecks clogging up your overview!!!! It'll end very badly for you!

I try to be nice and mind my business just shooting lasers at rocks. There is just way too many asshats in New Eden for that to happen.

What ever corp you chose to join just be sure they actually take care of you and not just house you. Having a group that will actually show you how Earn Isk, Survive and fill a roll you really enjoy is rare. It's common place for Corps to simply throw Wiki links in the chat and expect you to swim. Also don't get discouraged by the bad Corps.

Lot's of useful responses, good first impression of you lot :).

I've completed the first few explorer missions now. Starting to bolt things onto my navitas. Then discovering I should really check the power needs of stuff before I buy it. Oh well, that missile launcher will come in handy on something else I'm sure.

I have a small shield thingummy that has upped the hp of my shields, a 150mm rail gun with antimatter slugs (ammo types, lot's of choice, no clue as to what is what), a laser turret (do I need all the different types of standard crystal?) and the free kit you get with explorer missions.

I seem to have acquired some ships to redeem. Worth building now or save them to add to another character? I have popped the probe onto this character because I was curious.

Skills wise I'm just getting to level 3 things that involve seeing, targeting, power and cpu management, shields etc.

Anything that's obviously daft with that approach for the moment?

Do the tutorial/career agent missions, blow stuff up, get blowed up.

Then go join Eve University.

They have an excellent website, and while they aren't the best to learn about the PeeVeePee's, they are still the fastest way to basically learn about all the aspects of the game.

You then can decide what parts of the game interest you the most.

Good luck, and have fun.

Remember, it's just a game.

You know that guy on YouTube completely losing his mind because he got scammed/ambushed/shot by his own corp?

Don't be that guy.

Everything in EVE is a trap.

And if it isn't, it's your job to make it a trap...:)

I recall when I first started EVE that I had a massive amount of difficulty differentiating the myriad shield modules and weapons, so hopefully this list will help clear up any possible confusion.

Shield Tank modules (Mid Slots):

Shield Amplifiers - These are passive modules that do not need to be activated to boost the resistance profile of your shields. For example, a kinetic deflection amplifier will boost the kinetic damage resistance of your shields by a certain % simply by having it fit to your ship.

Shield Hardeners - These are active modules that cost capacitor to activate and drain it each time they cycle to stay active. The % resistance boost you gain with these is larger than if you use an amplifier.

Shield Boosters - These are active modules that cost capacitor to activate and repair a certain amount of shield HP each time. These boosters come in two types, ancilliary and normal. The ancilliary boosters are able to take shield booster charges and consume them rather than capacitor to repair shields while the normal boosters will consume capacitor.

Shield Extenders - These are passive modules that will increase the amount of total shield HP you have. Typically they are used as a part of "buffer" tank, which involves extending the amount of Effective Hit Points (EHP) you have in order to survive longer than the enemy you are shooting at. Often buffer tank fits will make use of a combination of extenders and hardeners to maximize survivability. Very popular for mission running, and is often paired with a shield booster to help mitigate damage in higher level missions.

Railgun Ammo Types:

Railguns fire hybrid charges, which deal a set ratio of kinetic and thermal damage. There are various charge types bonused for different things such as improved tracking speed, reduced capacitor usage, improved range. Antimatter is one of the highest damage type hybrid charges and has the lowest engagement range. It is typically used at close range.

Other variants like Lead (reduced capacitor usage) and Iron (I believe this has increased range) are used in other situations once you have ships that can project out to longer ranges than your current T1 frigates.

Laser Crystals:

Laser crystals are ammo that can be quickly swapped in and out of laser turrets, and deal a set ratio of EM and thermal damage. There are different crystals meant for use at different ranges, much like hybrid charges. Multi frequency is the shortest range crystal with high dps. Standard is meant for medium-long range engagements. X-Ray is for close-medium range. If you aren't certain of the range of a certain crystal, simply fit it and mouse over the module in your fitting window to see your optimal and falloff. The important thing to know about T1 laser crystals is that they will never break. When you use non-T1 crystals, you'll find that they have a limited durability and will eventually break after being used.

As a new player, one of the most important things you can do is train your fitting skills: CPU Management, Powergrid Management, Weapon Upgrades, Hull Upgrades, Shield Compensation, Shield Management, etc. I would recommend you consult the Magic 14: http://forum.eveuniversity.org/viewtopic.php?t=81073&p=706004 for a basic guide at what to train to at least level 4 if not 5 within the first few months of your play time.

If you do plan on exploring, I would train up the skill needed to use Microwarpdrives and the Cloaking skill since you will need it to equip a T2 Improved Cloaking Device which is mandatory for exploring. I would also look up some guides on exploration or on youtube since probing things down takes some skill to learn. Typically exploration frigates will not equip any weapons in their high slots. You'll find that the name of the game in EVE is specialization. Jack of all trades fittings tend to not work. If you're going to explore, you aren't going to be fighting other players, at least not in a T1 frigate so you would be better off fitting a cloaking device and learning to avoid competition from other players instead. As long as the Data/Relic site you are looking to explore has a pirate faction name in it (i.e. Angel, Sansha, Blood, Gurista, Serpentis) there will not be any enemies you need to shoot.

Best thing about the tutorials is they force you to do things in the game that you may never have occurred to you. And once you start doing something and get engrossed in it (missioning, PVP, whatever), you might just follow that track and never be exposed to (or aware of) other stuff. And you might eventually get burnt out on missioning or whatever, and are at a loss for something else to do.

It's kind of better to think of the tutorials as a "tour of what to do in EVE," instead of tutorials. They did a good job with the current version of them.
