The majority of the haulers can fit a good tank. Even the 4 that can be classified as paper bags can be fit to be 99% immune to gankers. They are very well balanced right now assuming you are not greedy and/or ignorant. If you are either, you should be punished.
They don't have enough tank for an escort mission.
It is like mining - dock or die.

Evade / reach the gate or die.

No stand and fight options.
Just a kill or not killed situation.

EVE is becoming shallow and puerile; it will satisfy neither the veteran nor the "WoW" type crowd in the transition.

This doesn't make any sense. Please elaborate.

No, not really. There is no point in hauling where you are as vulnerable as mining in an asteroid belt. You really have to be incompetent to be this vulnerable in a hauler.

Why would it be any other way for a hauling ship?

Risk Averse - someone with no death wish. Beware those who walk in front of moving buses
claiming you're unduly cowardly if you don't. They call you names, "Risk Averse" to divert attention
from themselves - who can be described by another name - witless.

There just isn't anything that can be said!

My transport ship has ridiculous tank and enough slots for immense versatility in fitting. Sure it's not a T1 industrial, but T1 is basic bare-bones ships for a reason. If you want a great ship, go transport. Just by skilling it up, a transport ship has great tank. Then you put modules on, and train up thermodynamics to take advantage of the role bonus to overheating, and you have a crown jewel of a cargo ship. And you have fitting room for MWD, cloak, and whatever else your imagination brings you.

As Lloyd already alluded to, half the "tank" has nothing to do with fitting your ship, it's the lump of grey matter between our ears, specifically how you use said lump. One loss stands out vividly in my mind (among other items); 6 odd PLEX, a vigilant and a loki all thrown into a fully expanded mammoth (rigs 'n all) with 1 adaptive field serving as the "tank". You just can't account for stupid.

If the Occator had a drone damage bonus it would be more powerful than a HAC.

Seriously, industrial ships these days are nothing to **** with if they're actually fit properly. It's completely disingenuous to argue that they aren't survivable.

Logi decloak + lock time before sebo gankers blow it away
(The 1 billion ISK fit does not count)

As to competance, have a look at how many industrials I have lost in how ever many years I have been here. Blink
