CCP, I just caught it in bits off themittani.com twitch, but if I heard that correctly (full presentation on Sunday), through new PvE linked to SoE, we will be contributing to mapping proteins.

As a protein chemist I have to say, massive congrats if I heard that right.

The ability of our activites in game to contribute to real world projects is something I never imagined a game would offer, but this is like Eve SETI (community contribution to science aspect of SETI) but for life science instead.

Blown away and totally awesome idea.

Hope I did hear that right; and Eve Forever if so:

Unless there is a way to interfere with someone doing this then it needs to not exist.

Like all those pvp kids who always cry saying it's the only way to play the game, being unable to kill someone while he's helping fight cancer is simply unacceptable.

Well if it does exist, this one little pvp kid might be a PvE convert to some extent. Might even repair my sec status if I need too.

The idea adds a whole new level onto gameplay that means what we do in game is part of something more significant.

Just as a concept alone that is a significant addition to Eve.

CCP Seagull mentioned the gameplay being linked into the Protein Atlas:

Sounds like they are introducing the folding@home project, uses spare cpu and gpu cycles to run simulations and you get points based on the number of work units you do. Maybe the SOE version will have you orbit a beacon and award you LZp for the points you contribute or some such.

I don't know the exact details but lots of the overclocking community use the folding for benchmarking system performance while contributing so if they tie that into EVE it would be a great way to make the grinding actually produce something worthwhile beyond pretend internet space monies.

Very cool if correct. I have been hanging for some specific desaturase structures for years. Membrane bound is always so difficult to crystallise :(

I really like that it is specific PvE sites!

I remember Playstation used to do something similar with an app you could download called Folding@home or something to that effect. where you could let the app run as part of a network and contribute computing power to a Standford project.

Just checked you can still get this program on pc.

Yeah I kind of hope that's the sort of thing.

There wasn't a lot of detail, so it might be initially more just accessing the data in the Protein Atlas and the images of already known information being linked into Eve, but even if that's the case to begin with, it would be great if this developed into a feedback process also.

So hyped, but without the detail, I'm looking forward to Sunday's presentation.

@ Scipio, the relevant stuff starts at 5 minutes

I'm sorry, i used to oc back in the day when i was a boy, i even had watercooling and ****, and i would never oc while playing eve... if it happens to be an unstable oc and it crashes while in lowsec...

Well, you might not only toast your cpu xD

Because tities .

I was referring to including the folding at home into EVE, not overclocking....i was just referencing the oc community as that is where i heard about folding at home as a benchmarking metric.

But on a side note, the whole reason they call it a stable overclock is your system doesn't crash even when running at 100 percent for several hours. If you crash your oc rig running EVE then you seriously suck at overclocking given it wouldn't stress a 386..

Apologies as my current connection isn't good enough to watch that video, but what is it that we get in return for contributing our CPU cycles and bandwidth? Or is that TBA?

Reddit notes suggest SoE lp/isk.... Some sort of minigame mission or other.

I'm not a ganker, but if I end up in highsec to run these, with all those ships about, I'll be tempted to shoot one.

No issue for gankers I think. I'm sure like missions, there'll be plenty of time to reship and complete these and we have no indication yet if there is any out-of-station aspect to it.

I'd be happy to introduce anyone to my alien. He's already said he'd give up some DNA. Alas. No takers.

There just isn't anything that can be said!

As long as there's no in-game reference to this I think it's a cool idea.
