New Player Seeks Guidance (Combat, Dual-Boxing, Goals, etc.)

Hey guys, as the title says, I'm a new player in this world. I have played before, but only really dabbled in mining and the tutorials. What that measures up to mean is that I understand the interface of EVE and I know how boring it is to stare at asteroids in 1.0 space. So I'm looking for a bit of guidance for my new venture into EVE. I want to get hooked and having goals always seems to work for me.

So my first trouble area, which I'm sure is the same for lots of other new players, is what do I want to do? I know only I can answer that question, and that's easy, I want to do combat of some sort. Eventually I'd like to get into lowsec pvp but for now I want to work my way up to high level missions. I'm playing as Amarr and don't want to change that. Does anyone have a really good mission running Amarr load-out they could share? I don't want anyone to give me ships or modules, I enjoy earning things in game, but some help in what I can work towards would be greatly appreciated.

Trouble area number two goes along with the first. I have two accounts and with my main I plan to do my mission running and eventual pvp. What should I do with my second account? Should I build it up as a hauler to follow my main around and salvage/loot stuff after I've completed missions?

Since things in EVE are constantly changing, are there any skills I should focus on before anything else? As Amarr, are certain skills more important?

Lastly, I just wanted to ask if any of you guys know of some helpful channels I could join that don't mind me asking questions now and then? The rookie help channel is great but it also moves quickly which can hurt the chances of getting an answer to a question sometimes. I also know that joining a Corp will help me greatly and I plan to join one asap!

Thanks for reading!

This is strictly my opinion...

When you find the right group of people whom you can laugh, rage, and rely on in equal amounts... THAT is when you get hooked to EVE.
The game itself is pretty interesting, but becomes a bit tedious when you're trying to do it by yourself. Even more so when you don't have a clear goal or aim. A group can give you one. Or some idea at least. Or not. Depends on the group.

Back when I was a nubbin, I found people who enjoyed running into danger Leeroy Jenkins style. Today neither they nor I Leeroy as much as we used to, but we have more or less stayed together through the years.
They are EVE to me.

Okay... so...

if you want to get into PvP... do it now.
I say this because in EVE... PvP and PvE fits, tactics, and mentality are opposites of each other.

In PvP, you fit a ship for as much performance as you can can possibly squeeze out of it. Small to medium-sized fights (especially at the frigate level) range from 10 seconds to 2 minutes... tops.

In PvE, you fit a ship for endurance and "efficiency."

It is like the same difference between an F-16 Falcon and a C-130 Hercules.
One has a helluva lot of performance and is good against a number of potential targets, but lacks endurance and can easily die if the pilot miscalculates the situation.
The other is really good at what it does for rather long periods of time and can take a bit of a beating, but will die miserably against anything outside of its specialty.

Now... if you get into PvP first you will pick up the cutthroat mentality of the PvPer and, whether successful or not, you WILL learn how to better defend yourself against other PvPers (more so than someone who started with PvE at least).

Do you prefer Lasers? Drones? Missiles?

Each one of those is a weapon system that will require a bit of a time commitment. And that commitment will decide which ships you will fly and how you fit them.

Only you can decide that.

Frankly speaking... if you are asking this, then the answer is, "you probably don't need that second account right now."

Personally, I have made do with a single account for a few years. It is a myth that every person in EVE has 2+ accounts. It is more like "three people have 1 account and one person has 3."

Everything in the "Engineering" tab is very important.

As an Amarr specifically... you want to pay special attention to skills that increase your capacitor capacity / recharge rate and lower the capacitor cost for shooting / warping / using modules.

(if you want more info regarding skills, check out the link in my signature... it explains the skill system in laymen's terms)

Welcome to EVE!

I can only support everything ShahFluffers said , find a like minded group and start shooting players early it will improve your game experience exponentially. The rest really depends on where you want to go in eve and what ships/play style you prefer.

Some general considerations since EVE is probably different from other games you have played so far:

Read a couple of skill guides and please, most importantly, find something fun to do! Do not mindlessly grind till condition A, B and C are met to try something you think is fun. Go on try it now and get better over time.

Key to eve is learning by doing - you can read a million guides , nothing will prepare you for the adrenaline induced handshakes you get while shooting your first player.
Do stupid things early on, where its easily replaced. Create content for you and others to laugh about and make memories to remember and friendships that last.

Eve is epic if you do it right, good luck on your adventure!

There is little advantage in a second account unless you intend to log it in at the same time as your main.

If you are just thinking of making a hauler or miner as a second character or need an anonymous forum alt (and never intend to log both accounts at once) just throw some plex onto the 2nd and 3rd characters on your first account and multi train those for a bit.

If you do decide to run a second account, try and think of things that take advantage of dual boxing or fleeting up. Typical examples:

- mining (the more barges the faster the rocks get eaten)
- logi alt (repping your main with an alt lets it fight above its weight and blitz missions)
- scamming alts ( a second character to affirm how great your ISK double offer is works wonders)
- salvage alt (salvage one mission while running the next, less common now that reprocessing and salvaging are nerfed)
- mission blitzing alts ( with more alts requesting missions the better the chances of a good one)
- cyno alt (not something you need in hisec or on a new character)

The best user guide for Eve is an experienced corp mate willing to mentor. Look through the in game corporate recruitment or the recruitment section in the forums - there are lots of new player friendly PVP corps. Most offer assistance with skill book packs for doctrine ships and ship replacement when you get blown up.

Your ALT should not follow the same career path as your main. I recommend that you consider logistics. It's a lengthy path but a high skill logi pilot will be welcome in any fleet - including incursion fleets which can provide an excellent source of income.

Welcome to New Eden!

If you seek adventure combining PvE with unavoidable PvP, run the Angel pirate epic arc in nullsec with a T1 frig and bring the rewarded blueprint safely back to Highsec...I did that 6 months in the game with a Tristan not losing a single ship.

I'm my own NPC alt.

If you want to PvP there is no reason to wait and many reasons not to. If PvP is what you are interested in do it now and don't wait.

There is no reason that you have to change races to change racial ship line ups. You can easily fly Minmatar, for example, on an Amarr character. If you want to keep flying Amarr ships then maybe you should say that to clear up confusion. The way this is worded I'm not sure if you really like Amarr ships and don't want to fly anything else or really like your Amarr character and don't understand the game mechanics that well.

If you don't have a need for a second account why do you have one? This question is simple to answer. If you have a need for the second account train it to fill that need if you have no need for a second account then why do you have one?

This game is not a linear game like other MMOs. There are no inherent "shoulds" in this game.

You said that you have a interest in PvP so we can inform on that. I don't PvP myself but I understand combat in this game to a point. Typically with Eve having options are more important than specialization so training up various stuff is usually better than focusing. This is compounded by the fact that skills get exponentially longer to train as you go up.

Damage is typically important in PvP unless you go a strict logi or ewar route so train damage skills. Some T2 guns can really change the whole feel of the weapons system.

Tanking skills are probably less important than speed and agility skills.

The ability to land the dps can often be more important than the theoretical number that shows up on EFT so support skills are important.

Early on fitting all the mods and rigs that you want without using lots of slots with fitting modules (Ones that increase your powergrid or CPU) are important and should be trained up fairly early.

Keep in mind that with these base guidelines (which are highly subjective) I'm only talking about say for example that you have 2 skills at level 3 and are trying to figure which to train to 4 first. It is almost never a good idea to train one skill or skill group to very high skill levels without training the others.

Consider Faction Warfare FW for your PvP account.

For the second account, I'd train as a scout, hauler, cov-ops if you don't have a particular career yet. Training the newbie skill plan (google) is a good place to start until you know more specifically what you want to do.
