Don't fully understand the ESS

So Today, I stumbled upon something called a..encounter survalience system..that says you get 80% regular npc bounty and 20% loyalty points. It said something about the amount increasing.
The 2 parts...
1. 80% payment
And..
2. Payment increase
Are what I am not completely understanding right now. I mean, this seems really useful to use, but I do not completely understand it as it is.

I will give an example. Say a standard npc frigate getting destroyed gives you 10 isk. If I use the ESS, that means, I get 8 isk and 2 loyalty points? But then that sounds like I am loosin money!!! :O
Now, the part about payment increasing..is that only the "shared pool" or only the loyalty points, or does it..instead, increase that 80%? So in my example, would I be needing to grind out the lower 8 isk until it bumps me up to 9 isk, then eventually 10 isk, and so on?

Thank you.

The ESS is one of the personal deployable structures that CCP has introduced recently.

Typically, structures must be anchored at player-owned starbase (POS) towers, and thus benefit only the corporation that owns the POS. And, the corporation must keep adding fuel to the POS to keep it online.

CCP decided to add these other structures to help the (less rich) single player who doesn't have access to a POS. Some of them (mobile tractor unit, mobile depot) are useful for whoever deployed them, while others are specifically designed to "steal" or "interfere": siphon units will steal moon materials from nearby POSes, and the ESS steals 20% of everyone's PVE reward cash and puts it in the cargo, available for anyone to take.

The idea was to allow "ninja" gameplay, similar to the ninja miner who sneaks into someone's territory, mines some valuable ore as fast as possible, and bugs out before the defenders can catch him.

1. Shoot NPC for 100%.
2. Receive 80% of the bounty.
3. ESS gets 20% of the bounty.
4. Repeat from #1
...
5. Profit! (empty the ESS).

The bounty increases in 1% steps up to 5 times. so a 105% bounty at the top level.

The more ISK you get, the more LP you get, starting at 0.1% per ISK, and that goes up in 5 steps of 0.02%

I live in null sec and have for years. I do a fair amount of ratting and anom running. I don't fully understand them either and I don't think that they get used much.

I am pretty sure there is an easy way to pay out evenly to everyone that has "paid in" or just take it for yourself. So if you trust everyone in system it can make you a little extra isk however it adds some complexity and as has been pointed out the opportunity to steal so I believe most players just don't feel it's worth the effort.

Info can be found here: https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Personal_Deployable_Structures#Encounter_Surveillance_System_.28ESS.29

But here's a few easily digestible tidbits...

1) Only the person who drops it can scoop it back up but anybody can access the ess. Any person attempting to approach it gets called out automagically in local.

2) Paying out the pool, returns the money to those who put money in. Say you kill a 100k isk rat at 0% bonus. You receive 80k isk and 20k gets put in the ESS pot. Take that same rat at a 1%isk /0.02% lp bonus. You now receive 81k isk, 200 LP(faction navy of the ESS's faction. i.e Amarr ESS is Royal Navy, etc.) and 21k gets put into the ESS pot.

NOTE - I am unsure if you get 80% of the LP straight forward or 100%, what I do know is you get LP as the isk comes in and do not have to wait until the payout.

3) Paying out the pool also gets you infinite pointed for 20 seconds. Using the take all = a global announce plus infinite point for ~2 minutes. The take all will drop tags that are worth X amount in a cargo container. For instance say the pool is 1,111,111 isk. You will get 1 1m, 1 100k, and 1 10k isk tag. The remaining 1,111 isk goes into the abyss never to be seen or heard from again.

2) The ESS is shown on your overview and anybody in system can see it/warp to it.

Ok.
Thanks for the feedback so far.

So it seems this more suits a person who stays in one place..rather then wandering nomads.

Well I suppose you could feasibly do a form of ninja looting with them by deploying them in a system with active ratters and then scooping it up and moving on. No idea if anyone actually does that.

Given the entire system knows when you access the ESS through Local Chat, that would be a great way to generate a lossmail.

Or does the act of the owner scooping it also loot it?
