Any T1 frig is good to start learning. Buy a dozen, undock and get wrecked. Most important is to learn from your mistakes; try to figure what went wrong and avoid that mistake next time. Fraps your engagements, watch YouTube videos, contact the guy who just smoked you as they're usually willing to talk to you and give advice, join fleets and talk shop, anything really that will increase your knowledge pool. Pretty soon you'll be the guy smoking others.

GL, and most importantly have fun.

Merlins will do it, pretty much any frig with over 90dps will do. The only drawback is it's a brawling ship so every time a rat spawns you need to burn away from the warp in beacon to kill it then burn straight back. beacon is life for AB fit brawlers, personally I don't like using anything that doesn't have an MWD, if I can't catch it I want to at least be able to GTFO.

The other option is an AB and twin web/scram. Use an Auxiliary Armor Rep for tank and orbit 500 with Neutron Blasters loaded with Navy Antimatter.

V high dps and enough tank to last the fight. A lot of opponents will load EMP ammo as you're a Merlin giving you better resists.

Train Thermodynamics, and if a Slicer or Condor or something else kitey warps in on you, overheat the mids as they land for just 2 cycles to ensure you catch them before they pull range.

The most important skills in this kind of pvp though is Dscan discipline and good old fashioned experience. And both of those are real world skills that ignore your characters SP.

Merlin is a solid choice.

Yes, 2 web blaster Merlins are a very good counter to some frequently flown ships above his weight (Slicer comes to mind). In case you are sitting in the plex, overheat your scram web and catch those kiters before they can pull range. For entering an occupied plex the Merlin has a couple of disadvantages and tends to perform not very well.

Though, if your skills and isk allow, I would advise to start with those FOTM hull rail Comets, they are not overly expensive and have a much broader engagement profile.

That works too, but you really want your locking skills maxed. sig analysis i think it's called and whatever other skills improves lock time, you also need to be still on the beacon when he's on the gate... if you're off killing the rat when you see slicer/condor/garmur on d-scan and you're ab fit - don't even, just bail.

Legion, Legion, Worm. Not the type of ships you should be picking fights with a newbie fit merlin. The worm is kinda doable if you know what you're doing.

Post with your NPC alt main and not your main main alt!

Not in a Merlin. I've killed a kindof sub-par Worm in 350 DPS blaster comet, but you basically have to be able to out-DPS the Worm with something tanky enough to survive the drones while you do it. 200 perfectly applied DPS coming in from light drones without any concern for transversal or range control is pretty insane, and the Worm is one of the tankier frigates to boot.

There's just no way to finesse a worm really. Ewar doesn't matter, range control doesn't matter, transversal doesn't matter, and he gets a bonus to shield resists. The only way to kill one is blob, or nuke him with sheer DPS, which the Merlin isn't quite capable of. No T1 frigate is. MAYBE you could tank one in a dual rep incursus but I doubt it.

t1 fits on t1 hulls with low skills and no experience. First thing you need to learn is staying alive in low sec with d-scan, staying aligned, and safe points, second thing you need to learn is what ships you can fight in your t1 frig.

MWD + Scram + Web is a good set up for killing kiters, they'l expect you to be AB fit in a merlin so they'll come in with mwd overheated and try to pull range before you can tackle them.

You can usually fight: Condor, Executioner, Atron, Maulus, (maybe a Slicer but im not sure) with these tactics:

1. Don't change the name on your ship, people will see it and think you're an easy kill so you're more likely to get better fights
2. Stay still beside the beacon, don't orbit it or move. keep watching d-scan and wait for one of the above ships to show up, run from just about everything else
3. Pre overheat web, scram, guns, and have them activated so as soon as you lock a target they automatically apply without having to click them one by one.
4. As soon as you see him landing on your overview activate mwd but don't move just stay still
5. As soon as target warps in click to approach him first, then spam ctrl right click on him until you start locking him.
6. Turn off MWD to reduce sig and overshooting once you have him well tackled and he has no hope of escape, just keep approaching him.

So basically just remember those 5 ship types and run from everything else until you get better skills. If they do manage to pull range and they start kiting you you've still got a good chance to overheat MWD and slingshot into him or escape.

Slicer can do it, hairy fight, and the guy must be less than perfect while slicer must be perfect and have a bit of luck with wrecking shots while getting grazed some, but it's a real exciting fight

u can use an ab.

just slingshot the kiters.

burn at them they will burn away from u trying to hold range.

then double click in sapce away from them.

u should start to pull range

no timing it just right hit aproach on them and overheat your ab as they start moving towards you

you need to time it so that you hit approach and overheat you ab just as the ab finishes its cycle.

you can attempt this in something like:

[Merlin, Unnamed loadout]
Micro Auxiliary Power Core I
Damage Control II
Magnetic Field Stabilizer II

1MN Afterburner II
Faint Epsilon Warp Scrambler I
Fleeting Propulsion Inhibitor I
Medium Shield Extender II

Light Neutron Blaster II, Federation Navy Antimatter Charge S
Light Neutron Blaster II, Federation Navy Antimatter Charge S
Light Neutron Blaster II, Federation Navy Antimatter Charge S

Small Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer II
Small Anti-Thermal Screen Reinforcer II
Small Core Defense Field Extender II
