[Suggestion] Security Status Decay

Reputation is a significant part of EVE. When you encounter another player you haven't met before, one of the first things you discover about them is their security status. It is the first indication of what kind of player they might be. +5.0 sec status indicates a carebear and -10.0 indicates a PvPer.

Here's the punchline - Reputations fade if you don't maintain them, but security status does not. I think it should.

I propose that sec status should begin to slowly decay back towards 0.0 if you don't maintain it by committing acts of crime or law enforcement. The details are up in the air, but as a starting point I suggest the following:


  • Sec Status will begin to decay after 1 month of Sec Status inactivity
  • It will then slide up or down towards 0.0 at a rate of 0.1 per day
  • This decay will pause and the 1 month timer reset whenever Sec Status moves away from 0.0 in either direction


The benefits of security status decay are twofold. It will encourage people to play with characters they might not use very often in order to maintain their reputation and it will enable people who decide to turn over a new leaf to do so more easily without having to pay for tags. Other subtleties include an insight into how active a player might be. A 0.0 sec status would indicate an inactive player and an extreme +ve or -ve sec status would indicate someone who plays regularly.

I'm not getting the link between sec status and reputation? Like there's no benefit for having it above zero. People are generally judged by their actions or pirate's little helper, not by their raw security status. Also, some people have taken the steps to exceed 5.0, and this would mess with that, though that point is a little academic.

Tags are one off the best things added to this game in a long time - they give a reason to be out in space doing something, are very accessible, and are an ISK sink.

In short, I'm not seeing how this would add anything at all.

If there was a core concept to EVE it would be actions have consequences. You ganked some highsec miner, he lost millions or hundreds of millions if he was implanted and you got pod. He has ZERO opportunity to undo your damage, his ISK is forever lost. He can make new ISK but the amount you cost him he can never get back.

You now want the ability to remove the consequence for yourself because you have found that the ganking life isnt for you. Well, you are lucky that CCP saw fit to give you opportunities to repent for your sins, personally i think the sec status loss should be permanent, just as permanent as the loss you cost someone else.

in short, no because your idea eats at the very core of what EVE is about.

Yawn,  I'm right as usual. The predictability kinda gets boring really.

Run loops (you only get sec status on first rat killed in system, per 15 minutes....kill 1 bs 1 system, go to another system then another...ideally you have this loop back to that first system after 15 minutes to rinse lather repeat

or

sell character


Loops is how I know many have fixed sec status on a char they wanted to keep. Loops are also how some I have known picked up killer deals on char sales, fixed sec status then sold for nice profit.


Or option 3....join a 0.0 crew, rat your ass off. Just don't lie about it. Smart (and bitter) 0.0 peeps will assume you are joining to fix your sec status. Which is cool....they know where you stand, leadership knows to not just outright trust the -9 blinky red outlaw char off the bat with the keys to anything, and its a nice deal. You fix your status while making decent isk, they get an assumed decent player at skirmish to help the corp while there (someone who can do more than n+1 f1 spamming is usually welcomed). Win win really.
