Question about POS defence settings

I was trying to find some clarification, on something that was bothering me, and didn't quite find what I was looking for and knew this'd be the place to ask - although, I realise it's probably been answered a million times on the old forums.

Here's the thing... I was considering putting up a WH Pos for an alt or two, and wanted to set up the defences correctly. I've heard conflicting information though, so can you clarify the following for me, please?

Defence Settings - Info from the Evelopedia

Quote:
Attack if standing is lower than:
If any pilot with a standing (applies only to the pilot's player corporation standings towards the POS's owner corporation) lower than the value you type into the box gets in range of the starbase then the tower will attack.*

Okay, I plan on setting this to 0.1 so that it attacks pretty much everyone. Would that be right?

Quote:
Attack if aggression:
If any player makes an aggressive action while near the starbase (firing on someone, using ECM, attacking with drones etc.) including members of the corporation or alliance that anchored the starbase, the starbase will attack them.

I've heard that switching this on will actually prevent your Pos from shooting at neutral 'visitors' if they don't do anything aggressive. For example, a Cloaky-Loki shows up at your Pos and accidentally drops cloak - I'd want my Pos to start shooting, but I've heard that switching this option 'on' would let him warp away quite happily... Is that true?

Quote:
Attack if at war:
If any pilot, who is at war with your corporation or alliance, warps to the moon where the starbase is located, the tower will attack that player.

Similarly, will switching this option 'on' prevent a Pos from shooting a neutral pilot simply because you're not actually at 'war' with the guy? I've heard that it does...

So, in short, I think I should set the first option to 'attack' anything lower than 0.1, but not touch anything else - if I want it to be aggressive - and that picking any of the above will 'override' my former request... Am I way wrong?

AFAIK....

A POS shoots a pilot if ANY of its "Shoot if" settings apply to the target.

So just set your POS to

Shoot if standing is below -> .1

and

Shoot if pilot is at war with corporation

This will have your POS shoot anyone who isn't blue with your Corporation (Not you or your alliance, unless you set it to use alliance standings, this is generally not a good idea if operating in a WH or off the grid low/null sec system, as your Alliance doesn't know the locals, whereas you might), and anyone who is at war with your corp will be shot.

This setup, 9.9 times out of 10, is how your POS anywhere should be set up.

as for the other options....

Shoot if agressed is actually kinda funky, as it will shoot anyone that locks and does anything at all to the tower, most notably attempts to rep it. Don't ever turn this on, or someone who wasn't supposed to be shot at will be shot at =)

Above response is spot on. Only check "If at war" and "Standings below .1". Also, the agression checkmark will also make your pos attack anyone with ANY timer, including the 2 minute timer you have for shooting rats.

Unless they have changed it "Shoot if Aggression" will shot anyone that aggrsses anything in the range of the POS.

We had a couple of people "dualing" outside the POS for fun, can't remember if they were same corp as tower or what, but the first pilot locked the other and shot and the POS lit him up.

The POS will automatically defend itself, so the Shoot if Aggression is not needed for that. The only time I might have that on is if I was doing stuff to the modules outside the shield and wanted the POS to attack anyone that attacked me. Other than that I can not think of a time you would want it on.

I also think checking multiple boxes sets up an "or" scenario, and not an "and" scenario.

'Shoot if aggression' is one of the idiot-proofing methods CCP put in. It will cause the tower to attack anyone, including you the guy who runs it, if they have an aggression flag.

Do not ever turn it on.

In hisec, you only need: Attack if at war.

Otherwise, for lowsec, nulsec, and w-space:

Attack if standing less than 0.1 (not available in hisec): Attacks anyone neutral or with low standing.
Attack if at war: Attacks anyone you are at war with (sort of redundant, but doesn't hurt).

You can change the standing to 0.0 to ignore neutrals, and turn-on Attack on Aggression and Attack if at War, but I don't recommend leaving at this setting. It is only good for temporarily allowing a neutral friend to be outside the POS. Attack on Aggression will attack friendlies that get aggression flagged for any reason. Remember to tell them if you change it back, and hope they don't forget (we lost a 1.2b friendly Tengu).

Though I've not confirmed it myself, I've read that a POS will always defend itself when fired upon, regardless of the settings.
