The EVE universe needs a game like Crusader Kings 2 (I think)

I've been struggling to figure out how to play Crusader Kings 2 and during that process I compare it to my favorite difficult game, EVE Online. Let me summarize Crusader Kings 2 as poorly as I can:

  • It is a very detailed strategy game with a terrible user interface
  • It includes typical mechanics regarding troops, invading neighbors, taxation
  • But it also has advanced features regarding spy networks
  • Murder plots
  • And more importantly, lineage

You don't play one character in Crusader Kings, you define a lineage of power by having children, defining rules, and passing power down after your characters die.

It crossed my mind that similar mechanics could exist like this in the EVE Universe. I can imagine a separate game where you define/control/influence the lives of NPCs in the universe. You engage in the politics, set up plots to kill opponents (if possible), sabotage competitors, etc. As a result of controlling/influencing the NPCs (I guess they're no longer NPCs at this point), it could influence the EVE Universe regarding which NPCs are available (such as agents), their qualities, and some degree of power fluctuations.

It was just an idea but I would love to see something like this. Even on a small level with a few planets.

Might not be the same idea but I've always wished that Planetary Interaction was like Civilization: Beyond Earth

What if you could see the civilization from orbit and shoot it?

Would be neat!

You don't play one character in Crusader Kings, you define a lineage of power by having children, defining rules, and passing power down after your characters die.

All of these things are already here in EVE in abundance, and a daily part of life for many players.

Stuff that's missing, lineage, children, inheritance you can add with a little RP, and many already do.

These things definitely exist in EVE already IN SPACE. I'm thinking another type of game could exist on some planets or even within stations...

Stellaris by Paradox (the same folks who developed CK2) was announced a month ago, might be as close as it gets to what you want. Stay tuned for updates.

There's a few aspects of how CK2 plays out in game that have 'almost mirrors' in eve.

Almohad doomstacks == 150+ super fleets
Karling Alliance == Blue Donut
Karling Implosion == many old allainces/coalitions

fair number of others too ..

Im all for more player influence on NPC dynamics/mechanics.

There was an obscure 90s Microprose release called Starlord that was very similar to a CKII/EVE crossover, before either one existed. It involved dynasty, trade, system control, the whole caboodle, ableit in a primitive 1 player setting. I still occassionaly dream of this game to this very day.

Well, that sounds very close to what I'm imagining. Basically I can see those items you mention with a little city management on stations and/or planets.

ck2 and eve will never be alike because in ck2 you can jump right in and start having fun minute zero.

in eve it's mandated you not play for 6 months before you can begin trying to enjoy yourself.

I don't think that's an accurate description of CK2. It's rather dense, complicated, and visually messy.

That is incorrect.
