Real legacy, how to make sure your stuff doesn't fade away

I'm an old time gamer, 50 years already, started in 1994 with Doom etc, advancing to MMOs and esp. Eve in the following years.
Started playing Eve in 2007 and made many, many friends, and sadly lost some too (IRL).

This is where this post is about :

What can I do to secure my assets when I actually die IRL ?
-I don't need my characters to continue, they are "dead".

But I'd love to have a "will" posted to CCP, where I can point out 1 or more trusted characters that can actually "can have my stuff" when I pass away. Playing this game for so long got me assets, maybe not much in some eyes, but friends who would get my Nyx or all the ships I have, plus my wallet would have something to hold on and fly it in remembrance.

I've seen too many friends pass away (my name actually is a tribute to a friend I made in 1999 who died in 2004) to see that having some kind of relation to this "stuff" would make me feel better in keeping his name alive.

Did anyone consider this / think about it, and what are the options ?

(NO, I'm not going to suicide nor have any deathwish, don't worry :P)

Can I have your stuff, when the time comes, please? :)

e: I think it is possible to orchestrate what you desire, somehow - perhaps filing a petition would be your best bet? I seem to recall a CCP employee posting about this - but it was a long time ago and thins have probably changed. Good luck!

If the Pharaohs couldn't make their last wishes stick, then what makes you think you can? Heck, they even had their bodies donated to science despite their obvious and well stated religious preferences.

anything such as this I guess you need to open a ticket.

I personally wish you to live happily long after eve online is gone.

The legal answer is - its ccp's game you dont own anything, thus you cant will anything to anyone. The practical answer is - after you croke - direct that someone log on as you and give away your stuff as you direct. I'd love to write that will.

I don't play, I just fourm warrior.

Well, Bumble is officially off the UaE Christmas list.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

As games get more immersive and longer lasting such as MMOs and how people are online and jacked in more and more this will ironically become more and more of an issue and something to think about. As games and game assets will accrue real world value they will be written into wills or used as assets in the legal sense. Atm CCP has said yes they own it all but there will be other games where this is not always true.

I have no issues with such a request on any level. But yeah writing it into your own will for someone to log in as you and then do what you wish with your assets would be the easiest way around this actually. All that would be required are the names of the accounts and of course any and all current passwords. How CCP would see that in the final end would be interesting none the less and entirely up to them. The potential then is quite a horrid idea that people would then be killed for virtual assets like they are for real assets and money in real life.

Ive thought of who would get my stuff and isk if I left Eve myself a lot these days. Not through death in my case, least I hope not at this point in life, but just leaving the game.

Best of luck with your idea, its not a bad one.

Have you heard anything I've said?

You said it's all circling the drain, the whole universe. Right?

That's right.

Had to end sometime.

Send in a petition about what you want to do.

You could maybe put your assets in a personal corp in which you are the CEO with a controlling number of shares. If you pass away, your trusted corpmates (which are your beneficiaries' alts) can petition CCP to remove you as CEO and divvy up your assets as per your wishes. But you would have to keep your assets in the corporation and generally trust your corpmates.

Worst case, have your account login info available to the executor of your will and let the executor divvy up your lewt. Also, have a "goodbye post" pre-written. I doubt CCP is going to bust you (or rather the executor,) unless you drop a ridiculous amount of assets to random people (i.e. it looks like you've been hacked.)

You'll probably want to keep a couple of PLEX in inventory so the executor can activate your account without having to provide new credit card details.

You could tattoo EVE Online with your account name and pwd onto your butt and then donate your deceased body For Science! Maybe some lucky college kid will notice the tat as they dissect you in some pre-med college room.

I'm in it for the money

I was being as helpful as I could - since when did being nice warrant a removal from one's Christmas list? Cry

Include a section in your RL will/testament, where you detail how you want your EVE assets divided, and a detailed explanation of how its done so that someone you know IRL can carry them out.

Barring that, include details of how you want your assets divided, and have someone send it to CCP after your death, along with a certificate of death, proof of identity to show the accounts were yours, and Login/PWs. Id think some ISD can be found who will carry out your wishes as far as expedience makes possible (simple task of contracting ships/assets, transferring ISK). Thereafter, the characters can be, appropriately, biomassed.

i could be wrong, but i don't think ccp biomasses deceased players' characters. i think they just lock the accounts and keep the characters around for posterity. (not that this kind of thing happens very often)
