Yep, that was probably one of the biggest issues, they ripped out the skill tree system for a class system something like you'd find in WoW. The skill tree system was essentially an EVE type system, training one skill to unlock another to train. They were categorized by classes but you can train any skills from many class to mix and match however you wanted to build. There was a cap, but unlike EVE the amount of skills were more limited, 100's instead of 1000's. A lot more skills than UO had though.

But there were a lot of other issues (or detriments), Jedi wasn't really much of a problem. That effected a very small percentage of the player-base, as there were not many that unlocked Jedi anyway. Most didn't even want to unlock Jedi. The game would have done better without them at all, as SW canon is more in line with and which most recognized.

But if you heard a bit of players complaining thinking Jedi was the problem, I wouldn't doubt you heard that from them. To unlock Jedi, you essentially had to have no life whatsoever. So, essentially you had very young and compulsive people unlocking Jedi (not all of them) and whining about almost everything since that was mostly the entirety of their lives. whine whine whine whine, seriously. All the whining and all the tears, it made it irresistible for players to train bounty hunters to hunt them down and perma-kill them! Big smile

But, people that like EVE, I know many of them would of liked SWG. The two games had a lot in common. A lot of SWG players came here after NGE. I'll dig up the graph here... http://users.telenet.be/mmodata/Charts/Subs-2.png
Notice the data points between EVE and SWG. The SWG slide happened at the NGE data point, sliding as long term subscriptions had already been abandoned at that point and eventually running out. SWG and EVE make a big X in the chart, many SWG players jumped ship to EVE. Likely, half that stuck around SWG did so due to having the SOE all access pass, mostly playing other games. I had one at the time, but I just canceled the whole thing at that point. SOE was ripping all their games to shreds at that point, wasn't worth the $22/mo any longer. SOE isn't even around any longer, they punked their subscribers around for too long.

Ah got it. yea i;'d be pretty pissed too, it sone of the reasons i play eve, the skill system

Pre-CU swg player too.

Best mining, crafting and experimentation system ever created in a game. I would gladly pay CCP 110 % of all my future earnings if they just copy-pasted that into EvE

i never played SWG, by the time it was out, i think i was in EnB, and then i came to eve when EnB closed in 04/

So i'm not 100% sure what the main issue for the hate of the NGE was.. iirc wasn't it that all the jedi and sith who had spend months or years (depending) gaining levels and building out there chars were suddenly non existent cause any noob could become a jedi/sith and be max lvl real fast?

Imagine you log into EVE tomorrow and SURPRISE!!!!!!!! - there's a new change where instead of all of the different skills and skill que system that you had for the past 6+ years, you had to respec your toon into: Freighter pilot, Gank pilot, Miner, Station trader - and that's it - NO mixing and matching...

Sudden, unannounced, unwanted, unliked changes tend to severely cheese people off...
(comments from 8+ year bittervet of SWG)

That, plus they shafted crafters. Pre NGE they had a decay system in place where as you used items they would slowly lose hp and then break. Getting killed also took a chunk out of the items health. Crafted items were also better than any loot and when it came to crafting the quality of materials used made a huge difference in the quality of the produced item. The very best equipment cost a fortune. When the NGE hit decay was removed and looted things became better than crafted and they savagely dumbed down the crafting process. Predictably this resulted in the economy going down the shitter with crafting becoming near useless. A true crime as the old SWG crafting and mining system is by far the best one made so far.

I played SWG for about 7 or 8 years, mostly on EU-Chimaera and Starsider. I flew lots of KSEs in space pvp on Starsider. :)

I miss SWG. :(

The 796 or so MB Ram I used to run SWG on still loaded .
The 15 years old SVGA 14'' monitor I used to run it on is not working properly anymore.
I got an offer for a $35 LCD monitor that is easier to carry than a CRT ($40 with tax).
The offer is valid until Thursday.

Then I can get home internet , reload the client (if feasible) , and log in to the EMU.

I used to play on Chilastra or I can't remember which other ones.

I used to have over 8 or 9 characters.

My main was an Entertainer (like every one at 90).
I had 4 traders, the best an engineering trader able to make R2 droids...
(I was planning to develop trading items network on all planets and production.)
The third best player was a Commando learning towards Base of Operation.

Our server lost to the Empire, but I never leveled a Jedi yet.
I played Rebel side and Neutral.

I won a tourney with the trading cards which are all gone now btw.

The worst part is that police tried to destroy the saved data.
The good part is the Lucas billion dollar deal for 30% more movies (total, 60% from current).
I will now copyright it to give in inheritance to my child with the attacks against it .
