500mn MWD's add 50 mil kg mass. Do these help when being bumped?

As the title states, would having a 500mn MWD help against being bumped in, say, an Orca with a Higgs rigs? It's a 20% increase over not having it (600 mil kg vs. 500 mil kg when using a large Higgs). Or does the mass bump from it only apply to speed bonus of the prop mod?

More noteworthy is the fact a 500mn MWD gets you upto warp speed in a single cycle, diminishing the chance of getting bumped in the first place

but what would I know, I'm just a salvager

Do you mean while sitting in a belt just having it running?

At a station, actually. It's one of the stations with a larger model and a smaller area for docking, and not a large number of areas to stick a larger ship (like an Orca) that wouldn't be easy to bump it out of docking range.

Putting up a POS isn't really an option at present, though it will be in the future. Until then, though, the goal would be to keep the Orca from being easily bumped outside of the docking range.

IIRC an Orca doesn't have enough PG to fit a 500 mn MWD without PG mods and/or rigs, which of course hurts your tank. If you're paying attention, you can probably dock before you get bumped, and if you're not, the MWD probably won't matter.

500MN Y-T8 Compact Microwarpdrive will fit without PG mods.

That being said, this is the bottom line:

I often read these posts about being bumped and ganked, and wonder what they are doing wrong to be in that situation in the first place.

All you need to do wrong to get bumped is fly something big and slow along one of the trade routes leading to Jita. Highest risk will be the choke point systems like Uedama or Niarja. There is also high risk of bumping on the undock at most trade hubs unless you have an insta-undock bookmark.

An Orca will warp with one pulse of the MWD at a gate - 10 seconds - which makes it a lot more difficult for a bumper to hit you. When mining it is very difficult to fit both an MWD and links but even an AB will get you to warp in 2 cycles - 15 sec with max skill. Prop mod doesn't help at the dock - you are already going full speed.

If you have been bumped a prop mod is useless - you are already going at maximum speed. Stop your ship, Use the camera to look straight ahead. Unless the bumper is extremely good (or lucky) you will eventually be bumped into alignment with something you can warp to. Otherwise, as long as you don't have an aggression timer, you can simply log off safely.

As Loyd says, if you are at zero on the station and paying attention you can dock before anyone can get a bump off. Having a bookmark on the "wrong" side of the station might also help. By this I mean, say the station is at one of the outer planets and has no gates or celestials "behind" it, get a small ship and go behind the station within the docking range and make a bookmark there, then warp out and back again so that anyone that wants to close up to you has to do the same or fly around the station.

Something interesting that I noticed a few months ago when I docked in Kamio. Some of the Caldari station models e.g. those used by Ytiri, Sukuuvestra, etc have a "slot" that you emerge from when undocking. So I land on the station and there is a Machariel inside the slot. So I figured he was afk and I would play a little game and see how far I could bump him before he got back to the keyboard. So I undock and then manually fly back inside the slot and get behind him for a bump. Start up the MWD and go for the bump - and fly straight through him. So without any further tests it looks like you can sit inside the docking slot, towards the back and be invulnerable to bumping - which is what this guy was doing. Haven't tried it as the bumpee though, so you would need to confirm whether that works as described.

Let me know where you are boosting with your Orca, and I will gladly help you test your MWD theory.

Make a bookmark in a mission or deadspace site, one that is more than 14AU from every planet and gate.

No one will find you there.

As a sometimes bumper, I'll say that an Orca won't get much benefit from using an MWD to counteract bumps. It will help, just not much.

It works the same at the undock as it does anywhere else. The only issue is that you probably undock with velocity in the wrong direction. Luckily you can stop your ship without breaking your invulnerability (you can't be targeted or bumped). Stop, wait until your speed is below 20 m/s or thereabouts, then align to warp and one cycle of the MWD will take you to warp. Of course this is only necessary if you aren't warping to something on your undock vector, like an insta-undock bookmark, which is an even better way to thwart bumpers.

I read them and then wish more people would try to gank me.
